Services
Buchanan County's first hospital was founded in 1917 in the one-time mansion of Civil War Captain D.S. Lee, to provide care for up to 12 patients at a time. Dr. J.H. McGrady and Dr. F.F. Agnew formed the first medical staff. They hired Minnie Chapman to act as head nurse and superintendent for $60 a month.
Buchanan County Health Center is a critical access hospital in Independence, Iowa with family medicine locations in Independence, Oelwein, and Jesup. With 18 clinical specialties, 19 medical specialties, a wellness center, a long-term care facility, and a retirement community, you'll find expertise for every area of your life.
One goal of our Teen Volunteer Program is to expose students to a variety of healthcare careers. During the year, we partner with the Independence Career Partnership program to provide students with opportunities to job shadow radiology technicians, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists and personal trainers.
To meet the requirements of the Patient and Protection and Affordable Care Act for non-profit hospitals, the Internal Revenue Service asks hospitals like the Buchanan County Health Center to complete a Community Health Needs Assessment every three years. The process used a compilation of the most recent local, state and national data, as well as the opinions of representative stakeholders from across the Buchanan County community.
Our Patient Financial Service representatives are available to help you with any questions you have about your bill. We will perform services that are indicated to be medically necessary, regardless of your ability to pay. A Financial Assistance Program is available to eligible individuals who have healthcare needs and are uninsured, underinsured or otherwise unable to pay for medically necessary care.

I’m sitting in the waiting room. Listening to the nurse “Joni” bi$:tch about me coming in and saying “why didn’t she go to her regular doctor!?” There was more. These doors aren’t sound proof and this is VERY unprofessional. Terrible place to be seen!!!

Absolutely worst hospital in the state and everybody knows it's called the band aid station for a reason. I went in for an anxiety attack and had a nurse tell me that my ex-husband is getting married who I hadn't been married to in 4 years. thanks for the lack of help and the breach of confidential information. The nursing staff is a joke!!

Not worth your time to use the walk in clinic, been here a few times for my wife and I, just drive the extra mile and go somewhere else, all they do is guess and tell you to follow up with your own doctor

Husband went to Urgent Care. They set up an “appointment” at 7, didn’t see him until 8, he didn’t leave until 9. Two hours later! Super slow service, disappointed.

My 50-year experience with Medical Associates has been totally positive. I have found the doctors and staff to be friendly and eager to help. They have, in fact, gone above and beyond the call of duty on more than one occasion.

Went with my husband to the ER and right when the PA walked in he asked what are motivation was for being there like we were wrong or drug seeking. We are not habitual occupants of the ER and only go if we feel we cannot wait to see the doctor the next day. In this case my husband had loss of vision with high blood pressure. They ran some blood work and basically sent us home. That is after the PA gave us very bad business advice.
We have seen this PA two other times over the last 7 years but at a hospital in Cedar Rapids. When we saw him there he was amazing and caring. Much different experience

Husband has chronic COPD, asthma, and it gets worse every year, so much we usually make 2 trips a year to the er. The nurse helping us first stated we didn't need to be here if he had a nebulizer at home, not seeming to care at all how bad his breathing was. Then proceeded to tell him that ibprophen will help his pain that has been debilitating for weeks. Not listening when he let her know he takes it constantly because he has been in so much pain. Not everyone who walks through the doors of an ER is looking for pain med handouts, nor are they looking to feel ashamed and worse than he already does
