Services
Founded in 1919 as the Glass Container Association of America, the Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) is the trade association representing the North American glass container industry. On behalf of glass container manufacturers and their supply chain partners, GPI promotes glass as the optimal packaging choice, advances environmental and recycling policies, advocates industry standards, and educates packaging professionals.
The association has two classes of members: Glass Container Manufacturers and Supplier Member Companies. All members receive a broad range of benefits when they join the association. GPI member companies bring an array of consumer product packaging to the marketplace, including food, beer, soft drinks, wine, liquor, and cosmetics.
Glass container manufacturing quality is a direct correlation to the process controls in place and to standards in which these controls are held. The batch house is the initial location where raw glass material is housed in large silos before entering the glass furnace operations phase. After leaving the batch house, the mix is fed continuously into the furnace or tank where it is melted into glass.
Glass is made from all-natural sustainable raw materials. It is the preferred packaging for consumers' concerned about their health and the environment. Consumers prefer glass packaging for preserving a product's taste or flavor and maintaining the integrity or healthiness of foods and beverages. Glass is the only widely-used packaging material considered "GRAS" or "generally recognized as safe" by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
GPI's 360° approach to glass education provides students with classroom and real-life experience to become the future of the glass industry, tomorrow. To take packaging and materials education beyond the classroom, GPI arranges tours of its member companies' glass container manufacturing plants.
