Between 1860 and 1930 there was tremendous interest in the social and natural history of the past. This enthusiasm is evident in the fact that a majority of the designs seen as "Arts and Crafts" were in fact artistic adaptations of earlier historic styles or botanical subject matter.
Some design motifs were simplified, others made more complex, and still others were abstracted so that the resulting patterns rarely resembled the original design source. This creative technique allowed for a fresh approach to tired subject matter. Significantly, all these varied textile designs co-existed throughout the era.
