Most homeowners call contractors to treat symptoms of an uncomfortable or inefficient home. If there is a draft in a room, you may call a window contractor. If the house is too cold in the winter, you call an HVAC contractor to put in a bigger furnace or perhaps an insulation company to add some insulation.
While most contractors can provide a quick fix and perhaps temporary relief, they are not looking at the total picture and addressing the true causes of the performance of your home. Advanced Energy Services employs and trains only certified home energy analysts, auditors and installers who use the most advanced tools and techniques available.

Your home has both air movement and heat/cold transfer happening year round. In winter, the warm conditioned air escapes through the attic and brings cold outside air in from the lower levels. In summer, the heat in the attic pushes the warm down into the home and forces the cool conditioned air out of the home from the same lower level sources.
We want to make the sophisticated home auditing process as simple as possible for you to understand. Think of your Advanced Energy Services home performance audit as a check up for your home, such as you would have with your doctor. We inspect your home's systems with state of the art diagnostic tools, confirm the status of your home's performance, and determine and treat what needs attention.
The first step to conducting a complete Advanced Energy Services LLC home performance audit is to determine what issues you may have in your home. Those questions and many others will be discussed during the interview process. Basically, any comfort, health, safety and energy cost issues related to your home will be discussed and noted.
The visual problems we see and document can cause high energy bills, uncomfortable rooms and even damage to homes. After the interview process, and before and during the actual home performance test, we will throughly visually inspect your home. We will measure the "footprint" which provides us with data we will need to calculate how your home is performing during the blower door test.
An Advanced Energy Services professional home performance audit is the best way to identify comfort, health and durability issues in your home and find major savings in your home's energy use. We will conduct many different tests throughout your home to detect potential problems and energy leaks in your home.

AES just insulated my attics and doors, and did a thorough, professional job. I got other quotes from businesses with very high Google ratings. But AES came in lower than others, likely because they recommended the insulation solution that was most appropriate for my house.
I could understand how folks could get scared away by the $495 audit. But I found the audit report useful and actionable. One key example: the audit correctly identified a health hazard in my basement that needed to be remedied immediately.
If you're questioning the point or cost of the audit, I'd just recommend

On the phone Mark quoted me an attic insulation price that was similar to my 4 other quotes and agreed to price match other apples to apples quotes. He seemed knowledgeable, really into the details and like he wasn't going to miss a thing. So I agreed to an "energy audit" that would investigate my house and find issues. Mike was fantastic and personable and performed the $495 "audit". However, the "audit" was a blower door test and combustion test, both of which are already required and included by all the other insulators. The audit missed several other things

Mark quoted me a competitive price on the phone, so I agreed to an 'energy audit'. The audit is $495 and is refunded with service. After locking me in with the audit, their second quote was much higher and outside the realm of the other 4 quotes. I worked with them and they brought the price down enough to make sure I got some of the refund on the $495 audit.
The morning of the insulation, Mark called right before the team was supposed to be getting there and asked if I'd checked my email to see that the worst case combustion test failed and I wouldn't get the $700 rebate unless I replaced my
