What is Community Acupuncture? Community acupuncture involves treating multiple people at once in a large group setting. This allows patients to receive more frequent treatments at a lower fee, and thus more desirable results. The community setting is a common form of practice in Asia, and is now becoming more popular in the US.
The group healing setting not only allows for more affordable treatments, but also increases overall healing energies in one room. As human beings and mammals, we are naturally drawn to community. We seek comfort, support, and strength from those around us. During community acupuncture you receive the support from the energy of those around you, while also finding relaxation during your own individual treatment.

Services
Portsmouth Community Acupuncture is a member of the People's Organization of Community Acupuncture (POCA), a non-profit co-op whose goal is to make acupuncture affordable and accessible to all. Acupuncture has been proven more effective if received on a frequent, regular basis. Acupuncture in a private setting can be quite costly and is rarely covered by insurance, thus limiting consistent care to a vast majority of the population.
Acupuncture is an ancient, time tested method for preventing and treating various diseases, illnesses, and conditions. It involves the insertion of hair thin sterile needles into various points located all over the different "meridians" or pathways of the body. Acupuncture helps the mind and body achieve and maintain balance through a mechanism we call "Qi, " or our body's natural energy.

I will admit to being skeptical before my first appointment... could I really get the same quality of care in a group setting and at a lower cost? After several appointments-- emphatically yes! Emily is wonderful and the space is relaxing and intimate. Emily remembers me and my symptoms at every appointment and adjusts according to my needs. Most importantly, I have experienced a lot of relief! I started going to PCA for pregnancy related concerns like carpal tunnel and sciatic pain. The acupuncture combined with some other simple strategies has made a huge improvement in my comfort and daily life

I have been coming here for a few years now. The community acupuncture model is a blessing for those of us who can't afford the $80 hr for a private session. Emily is a very efficient and knowledgeable practitioner. For the amount of people that must come through there every day, she remains attentive and thoroughly engaged in the process every time. Her presence in the community is truly a gift!

I was traveling to New England and after a 9-hour drive, I knew I could use a session. I had found Emily online before coming to the area and walked in on a Friday afternoon. I go regularly at home in Baltimore to a community acupuncture clinic, and I have to say that I really wish Portsmouth Community Acupuncture was in MY city instead! It was a fantastic experience. Since probably a lot of you have never tried acupuncture, here's how the whole thing went:
I filled out extensive forms detailing my health history and complaints -- for me, my biggest concerns are/were depression and anxiety
