Founded in 2002, the San Diego Sports Medicine Foundation was established to fill an existing health care gap for the youth of San Diego. We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to participate in life and we are dedicated to providing a medical safety net to injured youth who have no access to care.
The SDSMF accepts applications from young athletes (ages 10 to 18) that have a sports related injury which requires further medical evaluation and due to unforeseen reasons the athlete does not have medical insurance and/or limited financial means to pay for or receive the costly medical attention required.
Sports combined with the active San Diego lifestyle can sometimes lead to unavoidable sports related injuries. Many of these injured young children do not have health insurance, their family's do not qualify for government assistance and they have no means to receive appropriate medical care.
For a child to be denied much needed medical or surgical care because of their family's financial situation is not acceptable to the SDSMF; this is where we, the SDSMF step in.We sponsor their medical care from the initial evaluation to surgery to post operative care; our mission is to get the child healthy not only physically, but mentally so that sports can continue to be a positive influence in their lives.

It is the goal of the SDSMF to bring top-quality care to the injured youth of San Diego who are in need. Thousands of San Diego's young athletes have already benefited from non-reimbursed medical care, with a hundred of them receiving free MRIs, surgery, postoperative care, and bracing. Our goal is to provide the highest quality of injury screening in order to diagnose and treat the student athlete. We hope to return the athlete to sports as safely and as quickly as possible with the athlete's well-being always being the main priority.
