Breakwater Associates
Just as a breakwater provides a safe harbor for ships until they are ready for the open sea, Breakwater Associates aims to help steer children, adolescents, and young adults towards the competence and confidence they will need to navigate the rest of their lives. Directed by Julie R. Wood, Ed. S., LPES and Meg W. Humphrey, Ed.

S., LPES, NCSP, both Licensed Psychoeducational Specialists and Certified School Psychologists, Breakwater Associates is a multidisciplinary private practice serving the greater Charleston area providing cognitive and academic; speech and language; and social/emotional/behavioral evaluation, intervention, and therapy.
Services
A psychoeducational evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of an individual's cognitive profile, academic achievement, and social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Psychoeducational evaluations at Breakwater Associates are comprehensive, individualized, and neuropsychological-based.

If you should have any questions about the evaluation process, you may schedule a free phone consultation with one of our Licensed Psychoeducational Specialists/Certified School Psychologists prior to scheduling an initial consultation. We strive to keep our waiting list down to two to three weeks and are usually able to give our clients results within two weeks after the completion of testing.
Breakwater Associates offers comprehensive Speech and Language services, which include Evaluation, Screenings, and Therapy for birth to young adults. When working with clients, our speech therapist develops and implements individual treatment plans specific to each client's identified strengths and needs.
Our primary focus and passion is providing children, adolescents, families, and young adults the skills necessary for healthy functioning. When working with clients, we approach therapy with a systems outlook. This therapeutic process involves consultations with the client, parents, family members, school professionals, medical professionals, and other identified supports.
Scientific research reveals that dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. As recommended by experts in the field of reading and language research, Breakwater Associates employs the Orton-Gillingham based approach (also referred to as a structured literacy approach) for the remediation of dyslexia and reading problems due to other factors.
The professionals at Breakwater Associates are passionate about helping children, adolescents, and young adults succeed academically. Executive Function coaching can benefit all individuals, including those who have not been diagnosed with a disability. A personalized plan is designed to target each individual's executive function strengths and weaknesses and the area in which they are struggling.

Breakwater Associates has been such an amazing blessing in our life. We needed our son tested for dyslexia, and they made those testing days so fun. Something he looked forward to going to each day. Heather was amazing to work with and very informative. Meg who did his testing was our sons favorite person that week, he just loved her. I have nothing but the most amazing things to say about Breakwater. When it comes to our son, we want supportive, loving, and highly educated people who show empathy and are passionate about helping kids and families. Breakwater was all that and more. Highly recommend

We choose Breakwater for our son’s evaluation after they were highly recommended by several trusted friends who had had a wonderful experience there. I am so glad we did. Julie was so thorough and informative, and took the time to really get to know our son and us beyond basic testing. I was so impressed with her knowledge and expertise, especially in the area of dyslexia. Julie and Meg are beyond professional and knowledgeable and truly care about each individual child. I could not recommend Breakwater more.

Julie and Meg have been fantastic and I would recommend them if you want your child evaluated to help find that child’s strengths and weaknesses. We were able to get our 6 year old who was having some difficulties staying still and learning. That was 5 years ago and we just had him re-evaluated last month and the progression for our child has been amazing. He loves school, the teachers, learning, and of course playing. Highly recommend them.

Breakwater Associates has tremendously helped me and my academic career. During my early undergraduate years, I started noticing certain things about myself that were specifically inhibiting my academic success. I was consequently referred to Meg Humphrey and shortly thereafter we did a very thorough examination consisting of various lengthy tests. Meg always made sure I was comfortable and was very reassuring during the entire examination, which I really appreciated because this was such a new experience for me. I quickly got a comprehensive report from Meg and that has helped me get accommodations

Meg Humphrey and Breakwater Associates do an amazing job! Meg was able to analyze our son in such a fun way, making him feel comfortable and right at home. She was able to pinpoint his learning disabilities and explain them to us in layman's terms. She helped us to better understand a plan for him moving forward in his academic career which will lessen the stress and frustrations he may put on himself. She is compassionate, kind, and as a mother herself, is very understanding. We feel blessed that we have a clear path now and are thankful for Meg and her team at Breakwater Associates. I would strongly

Our experience at Breakwater was nothing but exceptional. They spent about 4 days testing my tricky child about 3 years ago. I love that they met with my husband and I privately before they met my child, which treats the child with a dignity that few places do. They bent over backwards and pulled in extra help to get the right diagnosis for us. I loved that multiple people from different perspectives and professions worked together to diagnose my child. Everyone (schools, OT, speech therapist) that has seen Meg's 28 page evaluation has been amazed at how thorough it is.
We had to leave Charleston

$40,000 In State Merit Scholarships thanks to Breakwater Associates!
We have relied on the professional services offered by Breakwater Associates going on five years. The competent staff was able to detect learning disabilities that were being masked by well-behaved children. After seeing one of our daughters start to struggle with the rigors of preparing for college, we enlisted their help and the result has been life changing for our entire family. We were introduced and utilized the strengths of the entire Breakwater Staff, testing extensively over a period over 4-5 months. The amount of time
