Friends of the Alger Theater is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization. Our mission is to enrich our neighborhood by ACTIVATING and RESTORING our historic theater to create a welcoming DESTINATION for programs created BY and FOR our neighbors. The Alger Theater is surrounded by incredible neighborhoods with beautiful homes and great neighborhood organizations.
The efforts of these groups, and ours, continue to reinforce the stellar aspects of our corner of Detroit and tirelessly work together toward a safe, thriving and prosperous collective future for all. Since moving here in 2008, I've seen major growth and transformation in my community thanks to the Alger Theater.

Services
Friends of the Alger Theater is an all-volunteer driven, non-profit community-based organization comprised of neighborhood residents and businesses founded in 1983. The organization was formed to address the decay and deterioration encroaching the neighborhood and to respond to the historic significance of the Alger Theater located at 16451 East Warren Avenue on Detroit's far-east side.
Over the course of nearly forty years, many and varied socioeconomic changes occurred in the U.S., Michigan, Detroit and finally the neighborhood surrounding the Alger. The original movie house concept on which the Alger Theater was founded began to suffer from poor attendance. In the mid-nineteen seventies, Ervin Steiner purchased the Alger Theater expecting to promote live performances, movies, and musical venues for community audiences.
Our board volunteers give their hearts, hands, minds (and dollars) to move the Alger vision forward. The Friends of the Alger are a membership-based nonprofit 501c3. Our board of directors' main role is fundraising. Board members make a significant personal contribution to renovation, events and maintenance activities.
You would like to become a part of our Volunteer team supporting one or more of our events or activities? High school students, scouts or other young people who need to put volunteer hours for their school, can also contact us and we will find a coach and something to do. The Friends of the Alger hosts special events throughout the year.
The Alger Theater marquee is prominently located at the busy intersection of East Warren and East Outer Drive. Thousands of residents and commuters will see your personal or business message. If you need your message to be viewable on the weekend, please book the two consecutive weeks, the one prior and the one following your weekend message.
