Pennsylvania Association For Sustainable Agriculture
Two dairy graziers discuss the challenges of taking on a farming business, being women in agriculture, and belonging to the climate-change generation. We studied 39 farms over three years to find out. Our study is the most comprehensive review of direct-market vegetable farm finances to date.

We spoke with the LEAF Project Founder and Executive Director Heidi Witmer about how our Diversified Vegetable Pre-Apprenticeship program complements the meaningful work LEAF is doing and why she wants to engage youth leaders in the food system.Dining restrictions during the pandemic have taken a tremendous toll on the U.S. restaurant industry.

Avoid scams: We've been notified of an attempted fake check scam. If you are selling something and an individual mails you a check in an amount that is significantly more than what you are asking-then requests that you direct the additional funds to a third party-this is a scam. Do not deposit the check (it is fake) nor send money to a third party.
Support cultivating farms and food systems that nourish, heal, and empower by becoming a Pasa member! Our members include farmers, food system professionals, and changemakers in the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. Members receive discounted registration rates to our year-round workshops and events.
Our Soil Institute advances the art and science of sustainable farming through education and research. Our region faces major food and farming challenges, including insufficient access to healthy food, degrading soil health, and an ongoing loss of farmers and farmland.

We need to train a new generation of farmers, advance innovative practices for farmland stewardship, and effectively communicate our achievements to consumers, neighbors, and policymakers.
Changing markets and a changing climate present the next generation of farmers with enormous challenges. Yet, few other ways of life offer the rewards that come from working within natural systems and the satisfaction of feeding a community. While formal apprenticeships have successfully prepared skilled workers in the trades for more than a century, none were available to farmers-until now!
Diversified Vegetable Apprenticeship (DVA) is a formal apprenticeship program registered with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry. It pairs beginning farmers with established host farmers to provide a guided pathway toward managing or starting a vegetable farm. The program operates in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas.
