Before LACP, the entity was called "The Julia Dean Photo Workshops" (JDPW), which was created and founded in 1999 by Julia Dean, LACP's executive director. The Los Angeles Center of Photography's (LACP) mission is to build a community of dedicated photographers and to strengthen the importance of photography as an art form by providing education, events, exhibitions, portfolio reviews, and public programs.

Our students love us, and for good reason. We take great pride in offering a premiere classroom experience featuring some of the top photographers and educators in the photo industry. But don't take it from us. Read the testimonials below and discover why LACP is such a special place to learn photography.
A big part of LACP's mission is to provide "focused programming for youth and low-income families, and community outreach." We take this very seriously. As a staple in the photographic community, our organization recognizes the importance of giving back by providing education in the photographic arts for underserved youth and other non-profits.
As a small non-profit organization, the Los Angeles Center of Photography depends upon the support of many local and national businesses, as well as other non-profit organizations. Corporate Sponsors help LACP by providing cash donations, offering services at discounted rates, and donating their products.

Crash flash had some useful tips and very happy that I was able to learn them. My suggestion so that another student doesn't go through the embarrassment that I went through. If the teacher doesn't recognize the brand name of a students flash, please don't comment that you have no idea of the brand and then walk away. My budget flash had many similar features as a Canon flash. Luckily, another student took the time to help me with my flash settings. Classes and dslr cameras are expensive enough and not having a name brand item can discourage others from moving forward in photography

Los Angeles Center of Photography is a wonderful establishment. I have taken several classes and workshops and gained both invaluable information and inspiration. I have found a photographic community here which has supported me in countless ways. I highly recommend taking classes and becoming involved!

The size of The basic class was fully misrepresented to me upon enrollment. I was told that the class was between 8 to 10 students, when I showed up to the first class there were 20 students in the class. If you are the type of student or photographer that can thrive in that type of setting, power to you, you should give it a shot. But if you're a beginner like me and require some attention, don't expect any and don't bother enrolling at classes there.

LACP works with you to find the best class that fits your style of learning. I signed up for a class that was a 1 week intensive and knew fairly quickly into it that it was too fast paced for me and I wasn't absorbing the info like I should.
So, I contacted LACP and spoke to Brandon and he put me in a 6 week-1 night/week version of the same course, which is a better pace for me. I was hesitant after reading an earlier review on Yelp saying LACP was rigid in their transfer policy, but found them to be quite flexible and worked with me for a solution. I'm so glad I didn't suffer

LACP is my second home. I've taken classes here that have completely changed my life in countless ways. Before arriving I was a "lone wolf", figuring out how to navigate my photographic career alone. Now these wonderful individuals have become my family: those who teach, those who work here and all the students looking to be filled with knowledge and inspiration. Any time I have questions there are endless people to turn to. If I need recommendations for anything I have a entire community of artists behind me. Being a member is a huge bonus as well. I've attended terrific talks

If you have anything to do with photography GO HERE. This is where the community lives. Great shows. Great classes. Great people. They have geniuses on staff.
PS: I glanced at some of the negative reviews, seems like 'user' error. The staff is generous and understanding and will work with your problems as they come up. This is a business, they need to create income to stay alive, they are not the enemy. Be kind.

I drove all the way from Las Vegas to LA to take a flash class at the LA Center of Photography, and Im superbly glad I did! The class was really fantastic, taught by Julia herself! The teacher was great, the assistant Amy was amazing (and she knew her photography stuff too!), the workshop was great, and the studio was awesome. I will most certainly be back for additional workshops.

Just finished a Street Shooting class and it was fantastic! I learned great techniques and shot my best photo to date -- and feel confident that now I know how to go out and shoot more great photos.
It was not until I went out shooting the day after class ended that I really appreciated how much I had learned. I was so comfortable getting close to people and getting a good shot -- what a difference from before!
The class was awesome. Stephen McLaren and Julia Dean not only are pros but also know how to communicate to students. The students ranged from novice to years of experience; all of us were

Great experience. Extremely professional, organized and I learned more that I thought I was capable of in such a short time.
I took the beginning photography class with Julia Dean. I knew absolutely nothing about my digital slr walking into this class. Julia is a fantastic teacher on all levels. She is very patient, motivating and her class has been refined through the years. She has been a professional photographer and teacher all of her life and her passion shows through her work and teaching style.
I actually have tried another school and learned so little, I decided to try again with

I use to model for the Julie Dean Photo Workshops when I lived in LA. Obviously I'm coming from a different perspective but I enjoyed working with the students and teachers. I thought the concepts and shoots were fun, informative and good, especially for beginners.
Anytime a company actually hires professional working models is a big thumbs up in my book, especially in LA.

My class on "The Next Step" with fine arts photography Aline Smithson was top notch. I learned and learned and learned... and at the end I had valuable tasks completed and a community that I am in contact with to this day many months later. This is a great school in my opinion, and I can't wait until I can afford another course.

Big waste of your money. I paid around $700 for an 8-week long class on working with off-camera lighting and the instructor was awful. Although the instructor had every credibility and a few accolades bestowing his name, he was an awful teacher. He just didn't know how to teach the concepts. When ever you asked him how to do something or why he does it all his answers were something like, "I just play around till I get what I need." He was also very unenthusiastic about his work and rarely engaged "happily" with the students.
What was even worse was the models. JDPW charges

The workshops at the Julia Dean Photo Workshops are the best photo workshops I have attended. They are taught by some of the top photographers working today. I have taken several workshops here and what I have learned has been invaluable to my career and to my development as a photographer. The photographers who teach here are committed to helping you develop your vision and to providing the tools you need to help you learn and grow, whether you are a professional photographer or an amateur. There are workshops for every skill level. The Julia Dean Photo Workshops will make you a better photographer

It's a bummer that the first Yelper had such a negative experience because I am a big fan of the Julia Dean class I took - and I am a tough customer to please when it comes to photography courses, having been disappointed with the one-day workshops I've taken elsewhere.
The "Mastering Flash" class was awesome because there was plenty of time to learn and then practice the techniques in a friendly, encouraging, non-intimidating environment. Julia even stayed after the class was over to personally answer a few extra questions I didn't get a chance to ask during the class

I highly recommend the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. They offer over 170 workshops a year, and they have many wonderful and talented instructors.
Julia Dean herself is really nice and down to earth, as well as an amazing photographer. The cost may seem high for some of the workshops, but really they are not making a huge profit there after expenses, I think, so the prices actually are reasonable. JDPW is a hub for the L.A. photographic community, and a great place to learn and network.

Can one give a negative star? If so, that would be my rating.
At this very moment, Julia Dean Photo Workshops (JDPW) has $275 it did not earn. I signed up for a class that I ended up missing due to an unforeseen vehicular emergency. Keywords: UNFORESEEN and EMERGENCY. I even managed to both email AND call them BEFORE the class actually started, and, still, I got nothing to show for it. They, however, have $275 for showing me nothing.
Their "refund" policy, which in my opinion can only be described as Draconian, includes no options, no mercy, and no wiggle room for these silly things
