Matthew Silverstein, PhD
Dr. Matthew Silverstein has been working in private practice since 1997. He was first licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (2001) and subsequently became licensed as a Clinical Psychologist in California (2014) (PSY26733). He currently is a core faculty member at Antioch University, Los Angeles, where he founded and directs the Spiritual and Depth Psychology Specialization within the Master of Clinical Psychology Department.

He was also a founding member of the LGBT Specialization at Antioch University. He is an adjunct faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute's clinical psychology doctoral program, where he received his doctorate in 2005. He received his Master of Clinical Psychology degree from Antioch University, Los Angeles.

Contemporary depth psychology is a branch of clinical psychology that focuses on the value of linking the conscious self with what is shut out of conscious awareness, i.e. the unconscious self. This approach also called "psychodynamic" or "psychoanalytic" can be applied to helping to explore and resolve childhood and intergenerational socio-cultural trauma.
As an LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) affirmative psychologist, I am committed to providing a setting to thoughtfully explore gender and sexual identities. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) combines principles of cognitive behavioral therapy with classical mindfulness techniques to help interrupt patterns of negative thinking and increase body based present focused awareness in a way that can foster the ability to consider life events with greater focus, clarity, curiosity, empathy, and insight.
Neurotherapy entails the use of neurofeedback (brain focused biofeedback) and cranial microstimulation to reduce stress and anxiety, support self-regulation, as well as optimize peak brain performance. Neurotherapy offers a technologically cutting edge, fully data-driven perspective that can inform and be applied in combination with psychotherapy.

It took me a few years and 5 therapists before I met Dr. Silverstein back in 2012. In my opinion, compared to all of my past therapists, this man saved my life. I have been cynical when it comes to the ideas of mindfullness and certain forms of wellness, but Dr. Silverstein's approach really allowed me to connect to a mindfulness/self care that for me, felt safe to explore without cynicism or suspicion, and was tailored to my needs.
