HISTORY.Washington Island became a Township in 1851. It is the only inhabited island at the top of the Door County Peninsula. Settlers emigrated here from Iceland in the 1870's. Today, Washington Island is one of the largest Icelandic communities in North America. The island was named by early American sailors.
