Durham Cycles
Sponsors of the National Champion Duke Cycling Team and the Duke Triathlon Team, Durham Cycles is Raleigh-Durham's bike shop of choice for racers and commuters alike. We provide bicycle sales, rentals, and repairs in the heart of downtown Durham, just around the corner from Duke University and the American Tobacco Trail.

Unlike most bike shops, Durham Cycles is authorized to sell over a dozen bike brands - so we'll find the right bike for you, not just the bike that's "right on the floor." Durham Cycles is locally owned and owner operated. Please check out our Facebook page for the latest shop updates, specials, and events!

Dave has 25 years in the cycling industry. After many years at Metro Bicycles in NYC, Dave co-founded The Racer's Edge in Boca Raton Florida before moving to Durham for a brief academic career. His treatise on off-brand derailleurs, Everything You wanted to Know about Sachs but were Afraid to Ask, can be found in the sub basement of Duke's Lilly library.
Please note, we are temporarily reallocating our monthly giving to help offset a team member's medical expenses. We encourage you to support the organizations below and we hope to get the program up and running again soon. Durham Cycles has always been more than just a bike shop. We guarantee our workers a living wage and every year we put our efforts and our money into organizations that support our core values.
Durham Cycles is an authorized dealer for more than 10 major bicycle brands. We're re not a "Trek Store" or a "Specialized Store"- we're a bicycle store. Our priority it to get you on the right bike, with the right fit, at the right price - with no obligation to a "house" brand. No obligation to a "house" brand, so we're allowed to sell not just the bikes, but the accessories that serve our customers best.
E-bike design and engineering is still developing. There are a lot of unproven products on the market that offer poor warranties and little or no post sale support. Durham Cycles only stocks and sells ebikes with industry-leading Bosch or Shimano motors and with frames designed from the ground up for E-Bike use.
There is a big difference between Kids' Bikes purchased from your Local Bike Shop (LBS) and bikes from a department store. The first difference consumers may notice is the price-Yes, bike shop bikes cost more.

Here's why: (1) LBS bikes use high quality materials, like serviceable bearings, not bushings which wear out fast and can't be replaced; (2) LBS bikes are generally lighter weight and easier for kids to handle than department store bikes; and, most importantly, (3) LBS bikes are assembled with care by experienced mechanics!

Dave and his team at Durham Cycles are the absolute best. Dave did a thorough fitting for my wife, and then help guide her through the process of purchasing a new Felt carbon bicycle. Her bicycle is and excellent fit, and she loves it.
Durham Cycles has done 3 fitting for my road and gravel bikes, and has performed every kind of maintenance and repair you can imagine. Their prices are fair and service are excellent.
Durham Cycles is my go to shop for bikes, parts, service, and accessories.

I purchased a bicycle earlier this year. I thought I was going to use it just for recreational riding. I was very impressed and grateful when we first arrived that for 20 minutes we discussed how we were going to use the bikes. He was very patient with us and answered every question that we had since we had not rode a bike in at least 25 years and realize the technology of bicycling had really changed. unfortunately I do not remember the name of the person that we talked to initially. But what I can tell you is that the three people that work up front seemed equally capable of helping you.

They had a good inventory and Phil was very helpful in helping me find a bike to suite my needs in my price range! He spent a lot of time with me explaining the pros and cons of the bikes in my sizes. I also needed multiple accessories (helmet, locks, water bottle holders) and he helped me pick them out.

My wife and I are biking novices, but thanks to Durham Cycles, our love for bicycling has grown in the 6 years we have spent in Durham. We bought out first nice bikes from Durham Cycle a few years ago and the bikes have been nothing short of a joy in our lives. Then recently, my wife became unable to bike uphill due to knee pain, so we reached out to Durham Cycle to find an e-bike. Within minutes, David from Durham Cycles found a model that was perfect her. David and his team have been incredible: honest, endlessly knowledgable, and always helpful. Thanks David and team! Your passion and professionalism

While visiting Durham, I was about to start a ride with my wife on the ATT. When I took my bike off our car, however, my front wheel was flat. At my urging, my wife started out. I found Durham Cycles about two miles away on Google, put my bike back on the car and headed over. They fixed my bike in a jiffy at a fair price. I was able to drive back to the trail head, get on my bike and ride to meet my wife about 8 miles down the trail. We continued our ride and then rode back together. Thanks Durham Cycle. You made our day.

My husband and I went here to hopefully find a balance bike that was the appropriate size for our son. The one we got him for his birthday was too large and we felt pretty deflated as parents after we saw his excitement and then he couldn't ride it. We were unfortunately not able to find a balance bike for him BUT the kindness of the staff, knowledge shared, and patience in trying to help us on our "quest" was much appreciated. We won't hesitate to come here with our future biking needs as a family!

Just bought a new Jamis Allegro A2 bike with Hydraulic Disc brakes, I absolutely Love this new bike that had been a long time coming, my old bike was almost 30 years old, and this new one is a great upgrade.
Durham Cycles is just a great local bike shop, that helped me find the right bike for my needs, and budget. Joe answered all my questions and was very helpful, The shop is reminiscent of a neighborhood bike shop I would go to as a kid, and had a great selection of accessories.

Newest update:
I really appreciate the owner reaching out to me about my experience. I haven't had this happen very often (I don't leave many bad reviews). He gave me a call and apologized about the sub-service. With living in a digital world, it was nice to speak with someone over the phone instead of just through email. Thank you for following up.

Updated review:
So after getting my tire fixed, I went out on my first ride. Thankfully I only went a couple of miles, because my tire blew again. I had to walk my bike a couple of miles home. Only to find out that they had put the

I had a flat and this cycle shop was the closest to my location. I stopped by to get my air-filled. They had a free pump outside. One of the workers stopped by to see if I needed help. I was able to ask him a few questions since I was a new cyclist. He was able to answer my questions and gave me tips. I really appreciated the help and assistance.

I'll be using this as my go-to bike shop in the area. Support this bike shop!

Durham Cycles is the best bicycle shop I've seen in my 15 years of cycling.
Durham Cycles has a welcoming crew that is devoted to enabling me to ride in the way I want to ride. I purchased a bicycle from them about two years ago and I've been steadily improving and upgrading the bicycle. The folks at Durham Cycles were available and helpful talking through my options during each improvement and took my priorities into consideration. Recently I installed a dynamo hub to power a battery and headlight. Durham Cycles spent hours with me to find the right parts and teach me how to install the new parts

I love Durham Cycles. I've purchased a bike there and taken 3 others there for maintenance. Dave and company are always super nice and helpful. They are also widely regarded as one of the best shops in the Triangle. It's one of the only places you'll get a free bike fitting as part of your purchase.

What a great team at Durham Cycles. They go above and beyond to help you have a great experience, whether purchasing a new bike, having repairs and maintenance done or bike fit. The bike fit they do is incredible, I went from hurting and pain every time I rode to pain free riding and a stronger cyclist because they not only fit you to your bike but show you proper riding techniques and equipment advice. I live 2 hours from Durham and gladly make the trip to have them handle all my biking needs!! Thanks Durham cycles!

Loved it and the people here so much. They were super accommodating and accepting of my old bike. They explained up front what they’d do, how much it cost, when the bike would be done. I’m not taking my bike anywhere else.
Edit: went back and they helped me pick out a new basket for my bike and replace the dust caps. Super helpful. Now I’m a true biker commuter. Thanks y’all.

Pretty cool bike shop located right in the middle of some restaurant favs. We rented some hybrids to go bike riding on the Tobacco trail which was a couple blocks away. Price is affordable. Signing in is quick and helmets were included. Keep in mind if you bring water their bikes only hold standard water bottles. Don't bring your fancy sports bottle.

As a new bike owner, I am really grateful for the advice and expertise of those at Durham Cycles, especially Scotty who was patient in explaining a lot of new things to me. Super nice and if you're feeling like an amateur who knows nothing, I'd recommend talking to him. He shared tips and tricks and made me feel confident to go biking in Durham.

I brought in my bike assembled but I had them tune it up to make sure it's good to go. Fair price.

I also got a bike bell, bike rack for the back, and a light. Little things that I probably cojld have ordered but all their prices were comparable

The owner, Dave, was extremely rude and kicked me out of the store.

I went in the store with my wheels looking for information about what my options and costs were for fixing it. The owner must have thought I was looking for a free repair lesson because within the first minute of talking to him, he told me that giving advice would be putting himself out of business and that I should pay for university bike-repair courses rather than bothering him. He then told me to leave his store.

Of course, these were not my intentions, but every bike shop I've been to have always had open mechanics

The only bad thing about this place is that I loved my rental bike so much that I now want one just like it even though I can't afford another bike right now! Though I have a bike of my own, I rented today because I don't have a bike rack and I wanted to ride on the Tobacco trail. My fiancée and I got there two hours before closing and though they typically only do day or half day rentals, they made an exception for us and allowed an hourly rental because it was so late. I'm so happy they did because I was really anxious to ride on a new trail instead of the same ones always do

A couple years ago, a good friend and avid cyclist recommended Durham Cycles as the place to go for all cycling needs. At the time, I was in the market for a tri bike, but being new to the sport didn't know where to start. Dave spent a good amount of time asking me all the important questions before taking even more time (and great care) measuring me. Only then did he make specific suggestions as to which bike would best fit my geometry. Of the several options he gave me, I picked one that has served me very well over the last few seasons. I love my tri bike and find it fits me perfectly.

My road bike (5 years old) has never shifted perfectly, even after multiple expensive tune-ups. It was getting worse, so I took it to Durham Cycles when I moved here. Most worthwhile money I've ever spent on my bike!! Dave, who helped me, was obviously very knowledgeable and thorough. He diagnosed the problem, fixed it, showed me features that I didn't know existed, and now my bike shifts better than it ever has. He replaced a few damaged parts after checking with me first, was honest, and didn't try to upsell me on anything. I spent less than I expected to spend. Everyone at the

First time buying a bike. Like all new beginners you start of buying something cheap and work your way up.

Most bike shops that I visited were rude and look at you like you are the dumbest person. Which confuses me because 1. It's business for them and 2nd Everyone starts from the beginning.

Well not this Bike shop. Super friendly, very informative and most of all patience with me. It seem like they understood what it means to be new at something. The price range like all bike shops lowest to highest.

So they weren't offended that I bought the $500 one as my "beginner bike

Went in to buy a pump, should've been an easy and quick thing. But, the guy who "helped" me was so rude and condescending that I ended up just leaving and going to a different bike shop downtown. I really don't understand all the reviews here that say folks in this shop are helpful. My experience was the exact opposite. I got such a boatload of "bike guy" attitude that I couldn't bear it--I had to leave because he was so unpleasant.

The guy actually felt he needed to explain to me that the large floor pump I was interested in was not something I could attach

I can't recommend this bike shop highly enough. The workers there are professional, knowledgeable, and very friendly. I bought my first road bike there seven months ago, and they were really helpful in fitting me for a bike and choosing one that fit my needs and was in my price range. Whatever they don't have in store, they order it quickly and build it for you. Whenever you purchase a bike from them, they give you three free tune-ups within the first year of owning your bike.

That would have been good enough for at least four stars, but I have been back many times since my first purchase
