But the history of the building goes back a century further. In fact, the State of Iowa itself is only two years older than 401 E. Market Street, which was built in 1848. Since then the building has been a grocery store, a fire station, an apartment building, a saloon, a barbershop, and even a toiletry factory for the Ernste Manufacturing Company.

John and Erma Alberhasky opened John's Grocery in 1948. Today, nearly 70 years later, we work hard to uphold the family tradition of providing quality products and service. I went here because of a Yelp recommendation. It reminded me of Pete's Market in Seattle - it's a liquor store with a grocery annex. If you have a favorite beer or two that you've had somewhere else you really might find it here. The prices seemed a bit high, no bargains. For that special someone or moment you just might luck out.
