Services
School One was built for one purpose: to offer students a high school, centered on their individuality and creativity, which challenges them to tackle the questions that matter most. We're passionate. We're caring. And we've spent five decades helping students make their own choices, find their footing, and thrive.
In 1973, a small group of committed parents and teachers pioneered the move toward student-centered private high schools in Rhode Island. They launched School One in a former bowling alley on Pine Street. Today, School One is an accredited independent school on Providence's east side, offering a rigorous college prep experience with an unwavering commitment to student voice, creativity and community.
A recent graduate from the University of Rhode Island, Emma teaches dance and assists with inter-generational theater at School One. Emma's experience in dance spans multiple disciplines including ballet, modern, tap, and jazz. She believes that movement is a powerful form of expression and you don't need to do the steps perfectly to find your love for dance.
The Board of Directors includes members with backgrounds in education, the arts, law, and business together with the voices of School One parents, staff and alumni to steward the school's future. Our board members bring diverse expertise and perspectives about progressive education, and devote countless hours on behalf of the School One community.
At School One it is our job to reach every student. We designed our school on a personalized approach to learning four decades ago, and we've seen other private high schools follow our lead. Our teachers teach to the students, not to the test. They understand different learning styles and have worked with students needing a range of supports for learning differences.

Having had 2 children go through PS1, I can honestly say they deliver on their talk about students being empowered/ready for the next phase. They are really motivated - they still love to learn and are so all around competent. I remember being so impressed by the 6th graders when we toured the school – and hoping my kids would be that smart, confident and comfortable in themselves. 7 years later, they were! What a great community and philosophy – it guides all they do.
