Services
We are happy to accept your donations of quilting cottons (quarter yards or larger yardage) and batting pieces at least 13" x 18". Please note that we are unable to issue receipts for tax purposes, as we are not a non-profit organization; but we do support many non-profits in turn. Unfortunately, we cannot accept home dec or apparel fabrics.
As a young mother, Kelly was interested in learning how to sew and quilt. She received her first sewing machine as a birthday present when she was in the hospital after the birth of her youngest daughter. After some basic home decorator courses, she took her first quilt class at Capital Quilts and fell in love.
Capital Quilts is your authorized Janome dealer. Please stop by to try the some of the available models in our shop and let us help you find the perfect match of machine features for your sewing needs. We provide a free lesson when you buy a machine from us. We also offer cleaning, tuning, and repair services for your Janome machine.
Capital Quilts is a consistent recipient of the "Handi Quilter Way" award, earning the award seven years in a row! This award is given to shops by Handi Quilter for excellence in longarm education and service to the customer. Capital Quilts is an authorized representative for all Handi Quilter longarms and midarms.
We need to know the exact measurements: Length by width, in order to provide a cost estimate. Please do not add any quilt embellishments on the quilt top prior to quilting. These would include but are not limited to dimensional applique, yo-yo's, buttons, crystals, etc. Save these for attaching after the quilt has been quilted.

I’d never heard of Capital quilts until I did a search for quilt stores last August. I had also never made a quilt before then and had relatively limited experience sewing. Since then I have purchased a new sewing machine, taken the virtual complete quilting class, taken a Longarm class, completed 1 quilt and am close to completing my second one. I have also purchased supplies for two more quilts. I think I’ve been to Capital quilts about 9 times since August and every interaction I have had has been wonderful. Everyone is extremely helpful and patient (even when I’ve arrived close to closing

Everyone seems nice here, but I paid $100 and dropped a machine off to be repaired around the beginning of January. I don't know what is wrong with it, but it just slowed down and stopped working, and my local place wouldn't fix any digital machines. I knew it would take a while, because of pandemic, but it has now been nine months and the only time someone has called me with an update is to ask me to pay for a part that was ordered sometime in Spring. Since then, I've called numerous times. At times, I've been told the part was taking a long time because of the pandemic. At times, I've been told

Would recommend and hope to visit again!!

I bought my new Janome sewing machine at Capital Quilts, and it was a wonderful experience. I got my free lesson that came with the machine from Barbara, who was extremely knowledgeable and generous: I'm enjoying my machine so much more than I would have without her in-depth "tour" of all the features. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming, and they had all the extra supplies I needed to start my project.

I've been shopping at Capital Quilts the past decade. Capital Quilts is a sewing store that sells sewing and quilter machines, fabric, batting, notions, thread, patterns, sewing kits, gifts (e.g., accessories, fabric face masks, and jewelry), and reading material (e.g., magazines and books). The staff were friendly and helpful. During the pandemic, you may shop online for curbside pickups. If you'd like to shop in-person, you must schedule shopping appointment. Face masks must be worn while inside the store.

Capital quilts is amazing! Their knowledge of quilting and fabrics is above and beyond. They can do the math in their head very quickly to help you figure out how much fabric you need for anything you are making. Julia was phenomenal! She helped me pick and match fabrics for an hour!

Pandemic Shopping at its finest!
Forced to buy fabric online, and wanting to make a baby quilt, I selected some fabrics from Capital Quilts website, and sent them an email with a few questions. They pulled the fabrics I was considering, gave an opinion, and sent me photos of the fabrics together so I could decide if I was happy with my selections. I have now ordered three times, they were so very helpful! Fabrics are high quality and beautiful. And a bonus- they ship very quickly!

I just spoke to a very nice person re questions about purchasing a machine and I'm impressed by the shop's array of fabrics so I looked at the class list. This is a quilting shop and I'm a hobby apparel sewer so I did not expect many if any apparel classes. I was happy to see that there was one beginner apparel class, however it is late in the year and the sessions have been going on for some time so registration is closed. Understandable. I'll check back and hope to see one or maybe even more apparel classes offered hopefully for intermediate sewers such as myself.
2020 UPDATE: Went into the

I discovered this quilt shop after purchasing some fabric from them at the Annapolis quilt show. I was very impressed with the large selection of fabric that they brought to the show and the woman working the booth was very friendly. I decided to make the hike to the store (45 minutes from my house) and was not disappointed.

This store is bright, open and airy but yet still manages to have a huge selection of organized fabric and supplies as well as customer quilts displayed on the wall. I really love how everything had price tags/labels, making it easy to decide on purchases and get the information

Great selection of fabric but don't expect to get any assistance. I've been in there a few times ... even caressed some sewing machines ... and I've never been able to get any customer service.

Thought I would give them another try since they had some positive reviews (must be family members). This place is Terrible! Actually worse than Joann's and this is a quilt shop! The employees know nothing about the classes or quilting or fabric. Honestly. I tried signing up for one of the classes and gave the name and date and the lady said she never heard of it and giggled. I asked to speak with a manager since it was in a email I received that day from the shop. The lady said the manager was too busy to speak with me. Really?! I asked her to check the classes again and she found it. She

I went there with my visiting sister, who is a quilter. I am not but do have a degree in interior design. Both of us were impressed by several aspects. First impression was how immaculate the store was. Second was how many lovely fabric choices they have, sorted not only by color but also by type (e. g., batik). We had gone to a couple of other stores and none had such pretty ones. There's a real artistic eye in their purchaser. Third, they have beautiful examples of quilts on display and classes you can take. My sister found the perfect fabric but, unfortunately, did not estimate correctly

I have been to Capital Quilts on many occasions and have never been made to feel unwelcome. Granted, it is not always possible to find available assistance when you need it and you may have to wait a bit. But that is not always the case.
The last time I visited I was approached at least twice by friendly people asking if I needed help. I am grateful to have a quilt shop in the DC area that sells QUALITY fabrics and quilting supplies AND teaches classes in support of an unfortunately, dying art.
Thank you Capital Quilts! Now if you would only open a shop in Virginia!!!

Here's my take on CQ: 5 stars for inventory. 2 for customer service. I really want to like this store. I learned to quilt here in a ten week course, during which the owner NEVER introduced herself to potential customers. I live close by, so I tend to spend some money here, but my major complaint is that no one EVER comes up and says" "what are you making? let me help you pick out fabrics." No one seems to be excited about working here. I will give a shout out to Barbara, who always remembers me and greets me....but as for the others....nothing. I'm getting a bit tired

I was roaming around Gaithersburg the other day and stumbled upon Capital Quilts. I was pretty stoked because I'm an avid sewer and new to the area and I read about this shop on forums online before I even moved here. See, I'm from the Midwest and everyone there knows that quilt shops are the best place to buy unique, quality fabrics.

Capital Quilts is about half the size of most of the quilt shops I used to frequent. Roaming around I noticed that the fabric selection wasn't anything to write home about. Unfortunately, I didn't see anything that I wanted to buy (very unusual
