The base of this desk is framed with 2 " x 1 " poplar lumber with 1/8" plywood secured to the studs. The surfaces are overlaid with Alder veneer and finished with a cherry stain. The countertop is solid hard maple, natural color. The desk behind the base has a plastic laminate surface selected to match the natural maple countertop.
A clear catalyzed lacquer, satin sheen was applied to all the wood surfaces. Solid Black Cherry bookcase with walnut tusk tenons and Hopi rug design. Services
In 1972, my father established The Heirloom Shop in New York City. Initially, it was a furniture stripping operation and antique retail store, but the little storefront business quickly grew to specialize in furniture repair, refinishing and custom furniture. It was in that environment that I learned about furniture construction and building techniques.
I was born and raised in New York City. I attended NYC public schools and then received a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the City University of New York. While I appreciated what the city had to offer, I found myself constantly lured to the mountains north of the city, particularly the Adirondacks.
Creating custom furniture is an artistic process in which each piece is tailored to the individual client. This approach allows a person to acquire the exact piece of furniture they have imagined. To begin the process, I listen very closely to what my clients say they're looking for and what's important to them.
When I apprenticed under my father at the Heirloom Shop in New York City, a large portion of our business was restoring antique furniture. The work gave me the opportunity to observe and understand how furniture is constructed, what construction practices worked and which ones did not stand the test of time.
We have commissioned Mike and Heirloom Woodworks on a number of custom pieces of fine wood furniture for our home. Mike's design capabilities and craftsmanship are outstanding. His ability to capture our style and deliver exceptional wood furniture is truly amazing. We couldn't be happier and highly recommend Mike for your special custom furniture needs.

I enlisted Mike's help to fix an antique rocking chair that has been in my family for years. He did an amazing job including creating a new spindle to replace the broken missing piece from the chair. Mike does amazing work, just beautiful. I didn't need a new piece of furniture, but the heavily carved, badly warped case good I brought him needed a lot of repairs and refinishing and he did a wonderful job on it. When I need a custom piece of wood furniture there is no question I would ask him to design and build it for me.
