A spine fellowship is the highest level of training available for spine surgery in the United States. Some orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons, at the conclusion of their standard medical training, undergo advanced training devoted entirely to spine surgery. This allows the opportunity to be involved in cutting edge research and surgery.

There is exposure to very complex disorders and problems, and provides training in the newest and most advanced techniques and equipment. Spine disease may be caused by degeneration, trauma, or physiological defect of tissue, bones or vertebrae, resulting in pain or discomfort to various locations of the spine and surrounding anatomy.

Keeping one foot forward of the other, with knees slightly bent, takes the pressure off your lower back. Kneel down on one knee with the other, foot flat on the floor, as near as possible to the item you are lifting. Lift with your legs, not your back, keeping the object close to your body at all times.

This dr is very arrogant, didn’t seem to care for my dad at all. Didn’t explain anything and only scheduled an injection for pain, when I asked if that was going to help with his numbness on his legs, he said No! And left. I took my dad to have a second opinion with another dr and right now he is in Emergency surgery list”!!!

What a wonderful experience working with Dr. Paul McDonough. I am so very glad that our area has a spine specialist of this caliber. I read about Dr. McDonough's training and it is the highest level in the country. I think he is a very personable doctor and I could tell he really cares about his patients. I am glad I finally found him. I had a fusion in my lower back and I never felt better in my life. Thank you Dr. McDonough for helping me to get out of pain after so many years!

I have to say that Dr. McDonough has a wonderful bedside manner. He was very experienced (19 years practicing I think) and knew exactly what to do for my problem. He sent me for injections and therapy first (one year ago) and then I ended up needing surgery after that stopped working. I had a wonderful outcome with Dr. McDonough. Now I am pain free and so happy! I am glad I want to the right person who is very specialized in only complex spine problems. I would recommend him to anyone who is suffering from neck or back problems!

I am so happy I finally got neck surgery! Dr. McDonough was very skilled, intelligent, and kind. I should have done this a year ago! My Internal Medicine Doctor referred me to Dr. McDonough and I am so grateful to him. I would definitely say to anyone considering neck or back surgery to check out his credentials and see that they are the very top tier of medical training. We are truly blessed to have his level of training and skills in Abilene, Texas.

Dr. McDonough did a great job on my back surgery. He removed spurs from my spine and trimmed back a disc. I received great direction for my recovery all the way through physical therapy. He did a great job with pain management early after surgery. I'm able to enjoy life like it never happened. I would recommend Dr. McDonough in a heartbeat!!!

I went to Dr. McDonough in Abilene after I had surgery by a neurosurgeon (not him) that went wrong. I needed a complex revision. Dr. McDonough handled my case with precision and was able to get me back to work. I no longer have any pain or numbness! I went on vacation to Disneyworld and walked all around for 4 days with no problems. Thank you so much Dr. McDonough!
