The Cordwainer Shop
We are extremely proud and excited to announce that our first book is now available for purchase! The Pathfinder: The Shoe That Built the Cordwainer Shop provides step-by-step instructions for creating your own pair of Pathfinder shoes at home. Contact us to order your copy for $35 plus shipping! Make your own shoes with this step-by-step guide written by artisan Molly Grant of the Cordwainer Shop.

Molly's guide takes readers through the process of creating the Pathfinder shoe, a style created by Cordwainer Shop founder Edward Mathews in the 1920s that is completely stitched together by hand. Along the way, the story of the Cordwainer Shop's nearly 100-year history is relayed through text and historical photographs and documents.
Services
The Cordwainer Shop was founded in the 1930's by Edward F. Mathews. His son, Paul, carried on the shop tradition as main footwear designer, and except for a 4-year stint in WWII, shoemaking became his life's work and joy. Many of his footwear designs are still produced at the shop today. Molly Grant now carries on the Cordwainer tradition of creating custom handmade leather footwear, and it has become as much a passion to Molly as it was to Paul.
Ever wonder how a pair of shoes really comes together? At the Cordwainer Shop, every shoe is made completely by hand using decades-old techniques, patterns and equipment. All of our shoes hold true to the mission of our founder, Edward Mathews: to create beautiful yet healthy and comfortable shoes that will last for years.
Time to treat your feet to your own pair of custom Cordwainer Shoes? Steps for ordering shoes are outlined here, and we encourage you to contact us with questions. Each pair of Cordwainer Shoes is created to last for years. We offer complete resoling and repair services to ensure a long life for your shoes.
Again, first and foremost, enthusiasm and a notebook. Molly provides all tools and materials, but students may choose to bring their own high quality hand punch, sharp scissors, etc. if they have them. Deerfield students can choose any style and leather, with the exception of Victorian Boots, which is an advanced class.
