Enjoy this slide show of recently completed jobs then schedule your free inspection and quote today!. 1 Yes we handle both methods of re-caning your chairs. Antique chairs often were caned using the hand woven method. Then in the 1950's chairs caned with prewoven sheets of cane became prevalent. FYI: Cane is the peeled bark from the rattan vine and has been used in furniture and basketry for hundreds of years.

Which ever way your chair was originally caned it will have to be re-caned the same way again. 2 On the left you can see me pressing the spline into the groove or channel that the sheet of cane is tucked into. This is held in place with water based wood glue so it's easier to remove should the chair ever need re-caning down the road.
Services
Why restoring your existing cane and rush chairs makes sense. If you've been thinking of replacing your existing chairs with new, think again. The chairs of yesteryear were often built with higher grades of lumber from old growth forest. These chairs were also built by old line furniture manufactures who crafted their wares in the European tradition with pride and structural integrity.
Cane for chair caning is actually the peeled bark of the rattan vine. Rattan, of the liana plant species, is a spiny climbing palm that grows in tropical forests throughout Southeast Asia attaining lengths of over 600 feet, though some of that length is lying on the forest floor.

Rattan cane is quite different from bamboo which is hollow, rigid and grows strait up supporting itself, where as rattan cane is solid but flexible and needs the support of surrounding trees to climb in search of light. Its economic value helps preserve tropical rain forest by providing a profitable alternative to timber logging.
All the work has been excellent. Google ***** Marty Muir ~ 6/22/15 The cane seat on my wife's 30 year old bentwood rocker was broken by some over exuberant kids. I could not find a chair caner in Arizona were we live but did find Citizen Cane on the internet and decided to give them a shot at fixing it so we boxed up the seat which was easily removed from the rocker and sent it parcel post per Paul's instructions.

Just had a weird experience today (1-27-22) taking our cane/wicker furniture to a local business for repair. It's important for us to use local businesses for services and goods. Paul of Citizen Cane's Restoration refused to take the job simply because we asked too many questions stating he couldn't handle the stress. We went there to get an estimate. We had two dining chairs that needed the cane binding replaced, one of which needed a broken leg repaired. We also had an 8-foot couch that needed the cane binding replaced in two places. Paul gave us an estimate of $600.00 which seemed rather pricey

It is rare to find a knowledgable, FINE craftsman who cares and puts his heart and soul into his work. When you do you want to scream it from the rooftops and that is what I am doing now! Paul not only beautifully recaned and refinished some antique chairs for me, but at first sight knew their age and place of origin. I was really thrilled with my experience with him and took his picture before I left, which I will post. THEN .... just after Christmas, I fell while carrying a prized possession of mine, a large, hand carved Court Jester I had purchased 50 years ago in Oberamergau, Germany! Both

Critical: Responsiveness
Sent him an email got a response of a question. Answered the question, no response for days so I called. He was short with me asked my name and said he would respond. Nothing. Taking my business elsewhere.

The cane seat on my wife's 30 year old bentwood rocker was broken by some over exuberant kids.I found Citizen Cane on the internet and decided to give them a shot at fixing it. Paul did an outstanding job on the repair. The chair is now back to new and my wife is very happy. The work was done a few weeks early and at a fair price. It was a very easy process and I would recommend Citizen Cane without reservations.

Paul was a complete pleasure! I took him a variety of family heirlooms I was nervous to have anyone touch. He not only did he restore them beautifully, one arm chair he also upholstered like a pro. His workmanship was immaculate. He breathed new life into furniture I had stored in a garage for years. Thanks to him I sit in my Grandfather's chair now everyday! It is pure joy. I am so grateful I found someone so talented and capable.

I have been looking for a reputable and experienced person to repair the cane on my grandmothers Stickley dining room chairs. I had been researching and looking for a long time. The furniture was given to me by my grandmother when my husband and I bought our first house. The set now holds not only memories of my childhood but also my childrens'.
I contacted Paul and he asked me to send him pictures. Then, he came over and gave me his professional advice on how to go about repairing and preserving our family heirloom. I decided to have him go ahead with the work and am so pleased that I did.
