In 1938 Roy Kersten established a saw mill in Wittenberg, WI. Sons Dick and Phil "Butch" purchased the mill in 1965. It wasn't until a substantial fire in 1977 that forced the brothers to move the operation to Birnamwood. Starting over with the purchase of state of the art equipment. Butch bought out his brother Dick and currently manages and handles all sales at the mill.
Butch put up dry kilns a few years later and also does planing and ripping. Kersten Lumber Co, Inc. has their own trucking company and they also make colored mulch for landscaping. Kersten Lumber Co., Inc. also does some of it's own logging. K.L.C. is partnered with Woodstock Flooring & Design Center also located in Birnamwood.
