Our mission is to provide effective, culturally competent, and trauma-informed mental health services throughout the state of Maryland. Racism is a serious public health crisis which results in severe psychological distress in Black and Brown individuals. Addressing and healing from this trauma is essential to the ability to thrive in this country.
We provide a safe and protected space for BIPOC and other oppressed cultural groups to heal from the detrimental effects of systemic racism and violence by using racial trauma interventions and trauma-informed care. The Urban Institute of Mental Health is committed to engaging in ground-breaking research and education in efforts to provide the best evidenced-based interventions when addressing racial trauma.

When we experience trauma, it hits us emotionally, physically, and psychologically. At the exact time that the incident occurs and the brain notices the significant change inside of us, the brain pays attention to whoever and/or whatever is causing the change outside of us and it takes a snapshot of the outer experience (Dispenza, 2017).

I absolutely love working with this agency. I have worked with many agencies in the past & working with UIMH has been the best experience. The staff are professional, knowledgeable & passionate. My clients love the therapist & therapeutic environment. This agency is doing the actual work of breaking down barriers and the stigma of mental health services within black/brown communities. My challenge has been finding providers that work with undeserved communities. However, UIMH has demonstrated passion & dedication to this very population.
