Most businesses do not realize the impact of e-waste on the local and world environments; they simply view their obsolete electronics as trash. According to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2009 statistics, 3.19 million tons of e-waste was generated, and this number continues to grow. These electronics contain materials such as antimony, arsenic, lead, and mercury that are unhealthy to us.

The R2 Standard sets forth requirements relating to environmental, health, safety, and security aspects of electronics recycling. R2 also requires e-recyclers to assure that more toxic material streams are managed safely and responsibly by downstream vendors-all the way to final disposition.

It also prohibits e-recyclers and their downstream vendors from exporting these more toxic materials to countries that have enacted laws making their import illegal.The R2 Checklist provides additional explanation of the provisions of the R2 Practices in a step by step process. Recyclers can use this document to prepare for the audit process, as this checklist is also used by auditors from the certifying bodies.
