Dr. McTavish received his Bachelor's degree from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1995. He then earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from The University of Pennsylvania in 2000, where he was awarded The Pharmacology and Therapeutics Achievement Award and The Dental Radiology Award.
Orthodontics is fun! Most of our patients tell us that their treatment was easier than expected. The braces and other appliances used today are much smaller and more comfortable than they were in the past. We are excited about orthodontics, and we love what we do. We believe it is especially important that we explain the orthodontic treatment process so our patients and their parents know what to expect before each visit.
We gladly accept most major orthodontic insurance plans, and our office is committed to helping you maximize your orthodontic insurance benefit. Orthodontic insurance is often different from regular dental insurance in that each insured individual usually has a lifetime maximum benefit for orthodontic services.
At your first appointment, you will be greeted by our receptionist and introduced to Dr. McTavish. You may wish to complete the online Health Questionnaire and patient information form before you arrive. During this initial visit, Dr. McTavish will look at your teeth and jaw alignment to determine if orthodontic treatment will be beneficial, and if so, whether now is the appropriate time to begin treatment.
Not knowing what to expect can be a major cause of apprehension. With this in mind, every effort is made to relieve and reduce our patients' anxiety by thoroughly explaining all procedures before they are performed. We believe it is important that we explain the orthodontic process and procedures so our patients and their parents understand our mutual goals of achieving esthetics, function and oral health.

We appreciate everything about Urbana Orthodontics. From our first consult appointments with Dr. McTavish, the entire staff is patient and thorough. Dr. McTavish takes time to explain all options and reasoning not only to us as parents but to our children as well. He does a great job involving the kids in their orthodontic health.

Everyone at Urbana Orthodontics is very friendly and professional. They are taking the required precautions for COVID. My 15 year old son is very happy with them even considering he had to get braces. He had mild discomfort right after they were installed, a lot less than expected. Dr McTavish is wonderful. They have different payment plans if needed and fair prices. We haven't had to pay for braces for 10 years but the price is about what we remembered. We are very thankful our regular dentist (Kopit dental care) recommended them.

I can't recommend Urbana Orthodontics and Dr. McTavish/his team enough. I started my Invisalign treatment in Nov. 2018, and by Feb. 2019 I was unexpectedly moved abroad for work. The entire team at UO was extremely helpful in working out solution and payments, ensuring I had all my trays, treatments, information and everything needed to get me through my treatment. They were more than accommodating and truly were a huge help throughout the entire process. The entire team from finance, to appt booking, to x rays - everyone was very kind and helpful. Really can't recommend them enough! Hands down

Everyone at Urbana Orthodontics is wonderful! Friendly, thorough and professional! They are very flexible when it comes to scheduling. My oldest son finished treatment and his teeth look wonderful. Extremely impressed with Dr. McTavish and all of the staff at this office. I had the opportunity to choose between a practice that is located closer to my home or switch to this practice and I am so glad that I chose this one! We have been very happy with Dr. McTavish and his staff. Our son chose this practice several years ago because he liked the fact that Dr. McTavish spoke directly with him and not just with me. It was the right… decision, and our younger one is in braces now, and her needs are definitely more involved than our son. He took a more conservative approach which has been perfect.

My son had a wonderful experience with this practice. Dr. McTavish always took his time to explain what was going on (even when I'd call back and ask him to explain again). The staff, especially Cyndy and Carrie were pleasant and easy to deal with. Getting and rescheduling appointments were never a problem. I highly recommend Urbana Orthodontics!

We were referred to Dr. McTavish by the kids dentist. Everyone in the office is so amazing and accommodating. Our son had his expander installed today and everything went well. He addresed all my questions and educated us on what to expect. To top it off he called us after hours to check up on our son to see how he was doing. After getting so many recommendations for Dr. McTavish we know we made the right choice. At our first appointment we were met with great staff and a thoughtful process to determine the best course of action for our daughter. She just had her expander installed and it went so smoothly. My younger sister just had one of her last follow up appointments at Urbana Orthodontics. Dr. McTavish and his entire office staff are fantastic! My sister, who typically hates the dentist, never once had anxiety about her appointments. The office is always clean, the staff are friendly and personable with both the adults and children. I especially loved that they always made an effort to address my sister by name. I was referred to Urbana ortho by my dental office (Kopit Dental Care). I couldnt have asked for a better referral. From the first time I can in I was very impressed by EVERYTHING. When I walked in it was clean and inviting. Front desk seems very up to date and organized. But most importantly Dr. McTavish and the ENTIRE staff are so nice.
