Small Steps Child Counseling values the sanctity and dignity of human relationships above all else. Our hearts are heavy with the recent and ongoing events of racial discrimination, violence and genocide across our country and in our state. We wanted to share our thoughts, commitments, values, and hopes for the future with our community.
As both an agency and a community member, Small Steps fully commits to honoring and protecting others' experiences, needs, feelings and values around the trauma of systemic oppression and racial injustice. This commitment extends to all members of the families we serve, as well as our employees, our leadership, and our community partners.

Services
Small Steps vision is to strengthen the mental health of children and families in New Mexico. Our therapists are trained in supporting children and families on how to develop heathier relationships, heal from traumatic experiences, and live overall healthier lives. Small Steps specializes in providing Infant Mental Health services which serves the youngest members of our society and their caregivers.
The Stepping Out Program was developed to help mental health therapists strengthen their skills in working with children from birth to 18 years old and their families. This specialized work requires years of post graduate training to address the special needs and fulfill certification requirements indicating competency in the field.
The FIRST Steps for BABIES (C) two-day foundational training provides both a framework for interdisciplinary early intervention, mental health and other health professionals to learn about the foundations of newborn and young infant development through the BABIES approach.
Participants will learn about the progression of the medically fragile and developmentally challenging caregiver-infant relationship as the baby develops using the PreSTEPS approach. The training will address mental health needs of primary caregivers and emphasize the need for well informed interprofessional providers to support essential relationship development between caregivers and their baby.
