On this homepage, I discuss my practice and how I provide mental health counseling, both in person and via secure video. In addition, I am actively supporting people in coping with the huge changes that have come about due to the pandemic. Make no mistake, this is a difficult time for most of us.

If you feel that this is an ideal time to get support and guidance in taking a look at your life and what you want going forward, I'd be happy to chat with you to see if we're a good fit.At this time, I am taking new clients on a limited basis. You can engage in an empowering counseling relationship without having to endure the frustrating waiting period--I am usually able to see clients within about one week of the initial contact.
Services
Okay, so a bit about me. I have over 25 years of experience in social services, including more 15 years in mental health. I earned my Master of Social Work degree in 1997 from San Diego State University, and have been a licensed clinical social worker in Oregon for 13 years. I've lived in the Eugene-Springfield area for over 30 years, and have been married to my wife Maryanne for 28 years.
Or, you may be thinking "what should they be?". Regardless of how much you have or haven't clarified your expectations for counseling, it's important that you think about what you'd like to accomplish. What issues are most important for you to address? Do your expectations for counseling--and what will be discussed--revolve around these issues?.
THE BAD NEWS: Depression is a very serious, potentially disabling condition. It can hit suddenly, or slowly and steadily get worse over time, sneaking up on us so that we don't even notice how bad it's gotten! People in our society minimize it, but it's no small thing. Details on Major Depressive Disorder, as diagnosed in the DSM-5 (the diagnostic manual of mental disorders used in the USA), can be found here.
Stress, or what one might call 'anxiety of daily life', is caused by many of the challenges of every-day living. Irvin Yalom, the famous existential psychotherapist and Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, has written a great deal on existential psychotherapy and discusses the four themes I outline above in greater detail here.
This is a very normal sentiment for someone who has experienced a major loss. Recovering from grief requires persistence, tolerance of vulnerability, self-awareness, and courage. No doubt, this is difficult. However, the alternative to working through it is NOT GOOD. People who don't work through their grief and emotions in some healthy manner almost always remain stuck in it.

I was seen by Dr. Obersinner, and I wouldn't be the same if it wasn't for him. I think back daily on my sessions with him and practice techniques he demonstrated to me regularly. I say to anyone considering reaching out for help with whatever it may be, that he is a safe place to go and he will do everything in his power to assist you. When the time came where we both felt like I was no longer in need of his services the feeling was mutual and amicable. I feel if I ever need his type services again I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to him. His services were sliding scale which made therapy available
