Newport Yacht Club was organized in 1936 as a membership corporation under New York State law with its clearly stated purpose: "To promote the sport of small boat racing and small boat sailing." Today, the club is located on the old Birds & Worms Hotel property, with the clubhouse still having much of the original structure intact.
We have an active sailboat racing and social program through the year and welcome new members who have an interest in small boat racing and sailing to come down to the club and check us out. More about the history of the club and membership information with an application for membership can be found on this web site.

Newport Yacht Club was organized in 1936 through the efforts of the late Oscar Kuolt and several others. Its first location was on Newport Island, just across the Massuag Coves from the present location. Pilings from the old docks can still be seen during periods of low water. In the fall of 1943, Newport moved to the site of the Birds and Worms Hotel, which is now our clubhouse.
Newport Yacht Club is the best kept secret on Irondequoit Bay. We are a very active community with year round club events, Thursday evening, Saturday and Sunday morning fleet racing, moonlight cruises, movie nights, Regattas and more. Our location not only has a great view but also a thermal wind that offers a dependable breeze all summer long.
From racing to cruising, Newport Yacht Club is home to a wide variety of sailboats. Not only do we have Irondequoit Bay to sail but Lake Ontario is a short distance away. The bay offers a unique opportunity as the afternoon thermals provide great wind into the evening. Wednesday evenings at 6 pm and Sunday mornings at 11 am finds our Snipe and Laser fleets racing.
