There are many reasons why someone might want to consult a psychologist. Some have a need for consultation regarding present life circumstances or have been referred for an evaluation. Some may have reason to refer others; in the family or in their business or medical/legal practice. Some may want the psychologist to become involved in community crises, business group analysis and intervention or to reflect or give opinions about current events.

But a major reason that individuals turn toward psychological resources is personal therapy or psychotherapy. When Ruth Gordon was once asked why the film "Harold and Maude" was so popular, she replied that "everyone needs someone to tell their story to". In the private world of psychotherapy, we are all provided the opportunity to speak and be heard.
Services
It is preferable that patients pay for their psychotherapy services out of pocket in order to have complete privacy and security and to minimize any potential outside interruption to the work. I am "in network" with BCBSM PPO plans. However, I am gradually reducing my BC association and do not forsee accepting new patients who require the use of insurance.
Some planned pieces include essays on the various experiences of anxiety and depression, issues in cross-cultural psychology, psychological distress and physical illness, anger and aggression, psychotherapy and the creative process, workplace and school bulllying and harassment, internet addictions, differences between counseling and psychotherapy, men's psychotherapies, understanding psychological evaluation, the influences of our near and remote ancestors and how psychotherapy can alter these influences, issues with prisons, prisoners and the public, the capacity for and value of solitude and more.

Dr. Garland has a wonderful ability to draw certain pieces out of what we talk about and help me recognize what they mean and how I can use them to change for the better.

Very caring and warm. Loved her atmosphere and felt very comfortable. Really has helped with deep longstanding traumas I've had. And she specializes in those who've dealt with long term issues. Been seeing her for 2 years and I find her fees very reasonable. I've seen a few other people and I just didn't mesh with them. I found her unbiased and actually cared. I was actually viewed as a human being.
