According to the latest statistics, 80% of the population have gum disease. Studies have shown that gum disease can cause havoc elsewhere in the body. Everyone should be checked for periodontal disease, because if it is caught early enough, non-surgical treatment may suffice. Dr. Timko is on the cutting edge of minimally invasive surgical and non-surgical treatment.

Dr. Timko was one of the first 150 dentists in the world to be trained in the minimally invasive SMART Bone Grafting Technique(R) bone grafting technique. He was the first Board Certified periodontist in Western Pennsylvania to be trained in LANAP(R) laser gum surgery, as well as the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique(R) for gum recession.
Services
Dr. Timko attended Grove City College, where he received a BS in Biology in 1975. He received his Degree in Dental Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine in 1980. He also received his Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Pittsburgh, in 1982. Dr. Timko is one of the few Board Certified Periodontists in Western Pennsylvania.
LANAP or Laser assisted new attachment procedure, which is often referred to as Laser Gum Surgery, is a patented therapy, utilizing a Nd:YAG laser, at a 1064 wavelength, for treatment of periodontitis (gum disease). This minimally invasive surgical procedure has FDA approval. Dr. Timko is the first board certified periodontist in Pittsburgh to be certified in LANAP.
Now, patients of Dr. Alan M. Timko, with receding gums, have access to a groundbreaking gum recession treatment option, The Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, also known as The Chao Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation. This gum graft alternative provides patients with a scalpel and suture free experience and has minimal post-operative effects i.e. discomfort, swelling, and bleeding.
The concept is based on a 3D visualization of the patients anatomy. Specialized software helps to measure and locate vital structures, such as the mandibular nerve, sinus cavities and nasal floor. The software program also contains 3D images of implants, and teeth. This ensures efficient, accurate and reliable planning of implant positions, sizes and number of implants.
The most definitive, accurate, and reliable method for diagnosing oral mucosal lesions is the scalpel biopsy. The oral brush biopsy coupled with computer-assisted analysis (OralCDx, OralScan Laboratories, Inc., Suffern, NY) has been developed as a technique for evaluating unexplained clinically detectable alterations of the surface epithelium of the oral mucosa whether cancer or pre-cancer is suspected (Sciubba, et al., 2003).

My visit with Dr. Timko to discuss my periodontal needs was a positive one. Susan and Isabel were welcoming and Dr. Timko's explanation of the procedure I needed helped me understand why it needed to occur and how it would occur. The surgery and follow-up visits were not stressful and I attribute that to their positive demeanor - very professional and caring.
