Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) helps cover your inpatient care in hospitals, including critical access hospitals, and skilled nursing facilities (not custodial or long-term care). It also helps cover hospice care and some home health care. When you enroll in Medicare, you receive Part A automatically.
A Medicare Supplement, also called a Medigap policy is a health insurance policy sold by private insurance companies to help pay some of the costs that Original Medicare does not cover. You must be enrolled in both Part A and Part B in order to be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Supplement. You may have heard the Plan "F" is going away.
Medicare Advantage Plans are health plan options that are approved by Medicare and run by private companies. They are part of the Medicare Program, and sometimes called "Part C." In order to join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you need to be enrolled in both Parts A and B of Medicare. Some of the plans require referrals to see specialists (HMOs), while others don't require a referral (PPOs).
