A periodontist is a dentist whose focus involves the foundation of the teeth: gums and bone. The origin is Greek and translates to "peri" meaning around and "odontos" meaning teeth. Training to be a specialist in periodontics requires three years of additional education beyond dental school. Periodontists are skilled in preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases involving these key components.
During your initial visit, we'll review your medical and dental history to be informed of any circumstances which may affect treatment. In the exam, we'll measure your "pocket depth", determine your risk for further loss of support, check for any loose teeth, and examine any contributing factors. Your referring doctor will typically forward x-rays or other information relevant.
For patients who are missing one or more teeth, dental implants are an ideal solution. A dental implant is a titanium post that is implanted into the jawbone to serve as an anchor for a porcelain crown (replacement tooth). Unlike bridges or dentures, dental implants connect to your jawbone in a similar way to your natural tooth.
The maxillary sinuses are hollow cavities at the roof of the upper jawbone, close to where the roots of the upper teeth end. If a patient's upper teeth are missing, the bone separating the maxillary sinuses from the teeth often isn't substantial enough to place implants. The bone may also be insubstantial due to disease.

I don't normally give anyone or anything five stars, but Dr. Ravenel should get 105 stars. I only wish she could be my doctor for everything, instead of just gum issues. She takes her time, listens and answers your questions. She actually called me herself to discuss my upcoming appointment. How many doctors would do that? If you need a periodontist, look no further. And her staff is amazing, too!

I don't think anyone comes to a dentist under the best of circumstances, and my case was a little extreme. With a cracked tooth and a lot of pain, I met Dr. Ravenel after going to my dentist, endodontist and finally periodontist. It was a hard day. Dr. Ravenel and her team took great care of me, and were able to pull my tooth, make recommendations on subsequent care and next steps, ultimately leading up to an implant. These are all words I never thought I'd say, and when in unfamiliar territory, it's nice to have people you can trust and who take good care of patients. All dentists should put her

The front desk manager Cassi has been excellent to work with! She has top notch communication skills and takes her job very seriously, all while making patients feel comfortable!
