Georgia requires both parents to provide for a child's needs and maintenance by way of child support. Before 2007, child support was calculated based on a percentage of the paying parent's income; now, Georgia uses an "income share model" which takes into consideration both parents' incomes and certain expenses related to the minor child.
Alimony, also known as spousal support, is support that is paid to a spouse for a specified duration of time. The difficult aspect in addressing alimony and spousal support in Georgia is that Georgia does not have any specific laws or formulas that calculate how much alimony should be provided or for how long; it is always assessed on a case-by-case basis.

While my first reaction after my consultation with Dr. Yu a few days ago was to be very upset and angry, I realize now that her honesty about my situation brought me to a better understanding of what I truly could and could not do in my pursuit to gain full custody of my son. Hands down Emily is the best lawyer I have ever worked with. My custody case was messy and crazy, but she helped me every step of the way. When things got out of control with my ex or any questions I had I was able to reach Emily or her paralegal Erin right away. She was quick to respond to my emails and phone calls. Emily is the best!!!! During a very messy custody issue she made me feel supported, and always made sure me and my child were okay.
