Services
I am a licensed professional counselor in both Kansas and Missouri and a licensed clinical addictions counselor in the state of Kansas. I have over 15 years of experience working in areas of addiction, depression, trauma, anxiety, relationship issues, grief, adjustment issues, stress management, and self esteem.
We develop ways to adapt to our situations that are not always helpful. Individual therapy helps to facilitate change to new ways of being that are more fulfilling and empowering. Some of the approaches I use are cognitive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, strengths based therapy, EMDR, and solution focused therapy.
Substance abuse and other addictive disorders are prevalent. Substance abuse is now understood as a brain disease. The disease is typically triggered by stress and the addictive substance or behavior is how to cope with that stress. Stress can be experienced in a lot of different ways. This can be your common everyday pressures that life instills or it can be not knowing how to have fun or enjoy life anymore.
Trauma can occur on a spectrum anywhere from being bullied by peers growing up to PTSD. Trauma can complicate how we function in our lives. The way we process the trauma event(s) can impact our current environment. EMDR is a physiologically based therapy that can help a person reprocess material that is disturbing to a new way that is less disturbing.
Anxiety can be situational, biological and anticipatory and is characterized by feelings of distress, nervousness, and tension. There are different categories of anxiety which can be experienced with different levels of intensity. What you think can lead to what you feel. Coping skills can be inadequate for dealing with feelings.
