A native of Florida, George Estess was born in Ft. Lauderdale in 1945. After graduating from Stetson University in DeLand in 1967 with a pre-law degree, he joined the United States Army. He went to Vietnam, where in 1968-69 he served as a helicopter pilot. Emerging from that conflict with the rank of Captain and having been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, he entered the University of Florida Law School, where he graduated in 1973.
