Called at 8:45PM before driving 45 minutes to get Sushi. The person on the phone said the sushi bar closes at 9:30PM and restaurant at 10PM. I got there a couple minutes before 9:30PM and had to wait for someone to help me. I was told the kitchen just closed even though they were still making some sushi. I went to screaming Tuna 3 minutes away. Same scenario but they made an exception and got me food.

One of my favorite asian restaurants. The stirfry noodles and sushi are noticeably fresh, food is hot and well cooked, and the luscious flavors make my mouth water just writing this review.
Whatever negatives have been written about Kanpai are relatively ignorant and are likely one off occasions.
Try this place! Normally I don't try below 4 star restaurants, but GIVE KANPAI A CHANCE. It's great!

I was a little hesitant to try this place based on past Yelp reviews and I have lived in the Third Ward for the past 3 years. Then, my beautiful girlfriend who loves the place wanted to go. So we went on a Thursday night and they were busy. We had a reservation and the only table left. The service and food were top notch! We had appetizers and then shared a sushi boat. The server made amazing recommendations and I will definitely be back. They even gave us a warning when last call would be on drinks and thanked us so much for coming to the restaurant.

We had an fantastic dinner at Kanpai Izakaya!
We made reservations through the open table app for a Saturday and we are glad we did, otherwise we would’ve had to wait.
Our host was very friendly and sat us right away where our introduced himself and went over the menu and made some great suggestions.
Everything we ate was amazing and we even tried the flaming sushi which was fun and delicious!
The restaurant and bathrooms were very clean.
We look forward to another fun date night at Kanpai Izakaya!

First things first, this is NOT a traditional Izakaya. At the time I went (early 2021) small plates and drinks were not their strong suit. However, as a modern Japanese fusion restaurant, they are very good. I particularly liked the cream cheese and tofu sushi dish and their truffle soy sauce is excellent. The atmosphere is nice, good place for busi, a date or a family and the service is attentive.
I was a little annoyed that Izakaya is in their name when this is pretty clearly not an Izakaya, but that doesn't mean they don't have good food.

We had dinner at Kanpai, we attempted to make a reservation but the earliest available was 9pm. The restaurant was dead when we arrived and we were informed that their last call for food and drinks were 9:30...this left us feeling quite rushed. We probably would have ordered more if we had longer to spend at the restaurant and had a few drinks. Unfortunately due to this time constraint, we were able to only try a few items. I got the rock and Roll which was absolutely delicious. The food and service was solid, but I do wish that they had been more accommodating/stayed open a bit later than 9:30

Great spot for sushi in the Third Ward! My friend and I shared the stuffed avocado - it was fried and therefore amazing. We also loved our saketinis, super unique and very pretty! We tried a variety of maki, however the Rock and Roll was our favorite by far. Our server was really sweet and did not hurry us at all, even on a busy Friday night. Can't wait to try more sushi the next time I go!

I'm crazy about Kanpai's salads. I could eat one of these every day of my life. First of all, they are huge for the price, and the ginger dressing is to die for. The ingredients are always fresh, and the addition of avocado to the salad is a nice contrast to the crunchy greens, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes. The salad is so big it is about two meals worth of salad. 100% worth it. My other go-to order from Kanpai is their friend gyoza. It's a never-fail app that I absolutely love- always fresh, crunchy on the outside and warm and filling on the inside. I always get an order of gyoza

Meh. Another non-Japanese run, 'Japanese' restaurant in Milwaukee. Nothing authentic at all. Americanized sushi that isn't even grocery store quality in Japan.
I know I sound like a food snob. But, I've been to Japan over 20 times and have family there. This is NOT good Japanese food, nor is it authentic. If you want authentic Japanese sushi, sadly, you won't find it in Milwaukee. You need to go to Chicago (and I really don't like saying that!).

This is seriously high quality sushi. Great place with a nice atmosphere for date night or the family. Coming from New York and eating out a lot this is one of the best sushi's we have ever had. In Milwaukee! Who would think it? The oh my god roll was the best. The hot spider and the crazy were also excellent. Our waiter Kevin was also great. Very attentive and helpful this place excels in customer service in addition to the great food.

Had a wonderful meal here this last weekend! Our waiter was super nice and knowledgeable. Upon entering, we let them know we had a reservation and were seated at a booth. It felt very safe. Everything was super spread out and very clean. I was worried because this was the first restaurant I've eaten at inside, but I was very pleasantly surprised. All the food was great, as was our sake. We ordered so much off the menu (we were very hungry), but everything was reasonably priced and good quality. I will definitely plan to come back again!

I love Kanpai, they have a great variety of sushi and I love that their menu really spells out the dishes so you know exactly what to get. Their prices are a bit higher than other local sushi restaurants but definitely still worth the price.
We felt that they took great measures to keep their staff and customers safe among the pandemic. Had a great time and will be happy to return again.

Despite sitting next to a window in winter which led to a slightly chillier seat, my turtleneck kept me nice and warm. The Hawaiian volcano rolls, which are the equivalent of sushi-s'mores since they are lit on fire in front of you, were a treat sent from heaven/Hawaii/the kitchen. The spicy/double tuna rolls had a little kick, like a child who is in the process of learning that they can kick you in your shins and laugh it off without any punishment because you think they're cute.
Excellent atmosphere, fantastic restaurant. Great menu, lot of options. Will most definitely without a doubt

Came up on our search of where to eat in Milwaukee. We went here and this place is absolutely great. The waiter we had was on top of allergies (gluten, soy, cucumbers) and so were their chefs. It was such a good experience here and their rolls are to die for. The rice had such a good aftertaste, that it left me wondering which proportions of sushi vinegar they use to do that. Since when does anyone talk about the rice at a sushi restaurant being that amazing? The atmosphere inside the restaurant is tastefully done as well. Great job guys!

You will not find a classic Japanese restaurant atmosphere here but I still like it a lot. I started with miso soup. Tasty but i think it needs to be more salty. I had Edamame but for me it was not cooked enough. I like it overcooked. Then I had fried Gyoza. It was nice. I recommend it. You don’t find fried Gyoza much around. Then I had seasweed salad. OMG, you should definitely try it. It is different! love it. Then I had salmon, tuna and unagi maki. They were big. It was very difficult to put in mouth in one piece.

This place is the real deal in Japanese cuisine. Our waiter was attentive to our needs. The menu had a lot to choose from and absolutely had a excellent time with my son on his birthday. The atmosphere was inviting and was able to have a conversations without shouting or talking over someone. I will go back again soon and would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for excellent sushi. Had the ginger old fashion which was out of this world. Had the waygu beef jalapeno poppers as the appetizer which again was amazing flavor I would also would recommend.

We came in for downtown dining and boy was that a good deal. Lots of food for $35. We knew that we probably wouldn't be frequenting this place, so we opted to get two different entrees to split and ordered two extra rolls outside of the DD menu.
The bad: every roll is so saucy except for the Trio roll. Each of those rolls had an element that I hated/took over the flavor, which made the rolls unappealing (cilantro, Serrano pepper). I just took out the elements that I didn't like and they made the rolls 100x better. Prices are obnoxiously expensive. $5-7 per sashimi/nigiri roll?! No.
