As with all medical conditions, a doctor should be consulted for the proper diagnosis of a headache type. Depending on the type of headache, treatment may differ. Accurate diagnosis of frequent or recurring headaches is critical to finding relief when symptoms occur and establishing both a short-term and long-term treatment plan.
The type and cause of the headache must first be determined before proper treatment can be established. Preventative medications seek to avoid the occurrence of a migraine while abortive medications relieve pain after onset.
