Because many of us live busy, high-stress lives, our nervous systems are almost constantly in a low-level state of "fight or flight." While the body is holding itself in readiness for action, resources are diverted from systems such as immune function and digestion - systems that are a lower priority when there may be immediate physical danger.
By breaking this pattern of stress and encouraging a state of relaxation, massage helps the body free up resources for repair and maintenance. These sessions are solution-oriented and highly focused. Matt will evaluate the musculoskeletal causes of your pain and develop a plan to address them.

Services
I believe that everyone deserves access to massage, and it is important to me that my clients get bodywork when they want it, not when they are in crisis. If you have limited financial resources, please inquire about my sliding scale rates. I appreciate your referrals! I will provide a free extra 30 minutes of work for every paying client you refer to my practice.

My housemate and I both have fibromyalgia. I also have neck vertebrae and head damage from childhood abuse that causes constant pain & migraines and my housemate has back damage. This masseuse not only comes to the house, which means we can get massages reliably since we both have trouble driving reliabily due to our health issues, he is one of the best masseuses I've had (and I've been getting them for over 3 decades) and he is a very kind person that I have felt absolutely not only safe but comfortable with. I fell asleep during my massage with him a session ago and no matter how

Matt is an amazing and incredibly skilled practitioner.
I had a wonderful experience working with him and have fantastic results. I went in knotted up and I felt super relaxed afterwards. Matt is one of the best therapists I've been to who successfully removed tension without causing pain as an after effect. This is a tell tale sign of highly skilled and effective practitioner. I highly recommend Matt to anyone looking for an excellent therapeutic session!

I got a great massage from Matt while in town on vacation. He's very knowledgeable in a variety of techniques/ modalities and integrates them well. I have chronic lower back issues, and the session was fully customized to address my specific concerns. Matt was friendly, professional, and very comfortable to work with. I left feeling looser and lighter. Highly recommended!

This guy knows his stuff.
I injured myself by falling two years ago and had gone to 2 different doctors and 3 different chiropractors who all told me I was fine, the chiros all telling me to just keep going back to them and my problems would be solved. I spent hundreds of dollars in copays and my back only barely recovered. I went to Matt, and he spent 30 or 40 minutes of my first appointment just adjusting my hips and doing a lot of checks on me. I have never experienced as much relief from my back pain as I did after that session.
I went back to him a few times and he told me if the problem

Matt provides effective massage techniques that left me relaxed and with a fluid range of motion. Most massages I have had in the past were painful and left me extremely sore afterwards. This was not the case with Major Massage, it was a pleasant experience from start to finish that left me feeling refreshed and energized! Highly recommend

Matt is not your average massage therapist. I have Matt do some bodywork on me just about every time I'm in Austin and he has worked miracles for me.
I've been doing yoga for 25 years and recently I developed pain in my elbows that we significantly impacting my practice. Being in my 50's I thought that it was just part of aging and that maybe some asanas were simply going to be beyond me after that, but Matt spent all of five minutes working intensively on my elbows and within a day I was back in form and having no elbow issues at all. It was almost spooky. And he has addressed

I just got out of my first massage with Matt Major and I am sold. Matt applied exactly the right amount of pressure and was extremely attentive to the sore and sensitive areas. I especially enjoyed the calm, relaxing atmosphere of the office (water feature a welcome aesthetic) and massage room. A small detail I appreciated was that Matt used a massage oil with no scent, which helped me remain relaxed and present. Entirely positive experience. Strongly recommend.

Being a former professional dancer and current fitness professional I have had tons of bodywork done to deal with some chronic injuries. I saw Matt for the first time yesterday and was impressed with every aspect of his practice. He took the time to ask questions so he could give the best massage for my needs. I often do not see male massage therapists, but I felt 100% comfortable with Matt and would recommend him to anyone. He is highly skilled and very knowledgeable.

With Christmas and the end of the year just right around the corner, I didn't see much room in my busy schedule... but I knew I needed to find some time to take care of myself. I'm so glad I did because I just found a little bit of heaven in the middle of a hectic work week! The only disappointment was in myself--- that I didn't schedule for a 90 minute. Matt was very professional and actually listened to my concerns and worked out all of my problem areas. I will definitely return!

Matt is awesome! I had issues with my legs, which prevented me from dancing properly. Matt worked his magic and the next day I was on my toes ready to dance. He is concerned about the patient, asking many questions, and also took the time to explain which muscles were affected. He also gave me the confidence that I would be able to dance as soon as possible. I would recommend Matt!

This is my second review ever on Yelp. And in this instance, although it's a somewhat belated review (I saw Matt in November 2013) I continue to remember how good the massage was. But it's more than that -- he took the care to REALLY talk through with me what was going on with my lower back, and was patient as I vented about my frustrations with the ongoing pain. He then really focused on finding the trouble area, and worked on it diligently. It wasn't cured overnight, but ever since that session with Matt I have been on a positive trajectory and am feeling better and better. I don

I love getting a massage; I always feels great afterwords. However, when I get a massage from Matt, the relief from soreness and stiffness lasts a week or more. He is the only therapist I have seen regularly and over time he has made a difference, as much if not more than physical therapy which I have done for my shoulder and hip. He is the best!

Matt is pretty darn awesome.
A little about the location/office: It's out on Mass Ave past Porter. It's accessible by bus and is right near the bike path. There is plenty of metered parking out in front. The office isn't the most extravagant place but Matt has definitely created a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Appointments can be made through an online system, which is really convenient. Prices are about on par for other massage therapists in the area.
I came to him after purchasing an Amazon Local deals for two 60 minute massages. There was a lag between my two appointments

I've gotten massages at quite a few of the local places - Hands on Health, Massage Therapy Works, Healthworks - and I think Matt's one of the best around. He communicates very well and manages to be both gentle and effective at working out problem areas (I work in a lab and do a lot of repetitive movements, so I usually have some pretty crazy knots in my upper back and neck). In the past when I've had deep tissue massage, I've often felt uncomfortable with the pressure, even to the point of pain. Matt showed me there IS another way with deep tissue massage - it doesn't

This review is not based on my session with Matt, but my relationship with Matt as a former student. Matt is a master massage therapist that instructed me on the intricacies of myofascial release, hydrotherapy, chair massage and, most importantly the elements of being a quality therapist by interacting with the client; listening, understanding and designing a custom massage to the client in both the feedback from the client and by what their body is telling the therapists touch.
I just opened my own practice on Newbury St and always use Matt's in-depth instruction of various techniques on

Disclaimer: I've known Matt for years and consider him a friend. I was initially a little concerned about having someone who knows me work on me physically, but Matt keeps things professional, while still creating and maintaining a bond of trust and connection with his clients.
I suffer from both kyphosis & scoliosis, and Matt has done wonders for my alignment, and for alleviating pain - though I must admit, weight training has probably been a big part of that. He's also great for working though pain and stiffness in pretty much any part of the body (see previous note about weight

Matt's been my good friend for a long time now, so know that I'm not just saying he's an excellent massage therapist, simply because I count him as a friend. No, he's just a very skilled, very intuitive, compassionate, and gifted massage therapist.
I'm a weightlifter, and I tend to do punishing stuff to my body. I also have some mild residual spine creaks, due to being rear-ended by an SUV a few years back. Whiplash is not fun. Matt helps my muscles and spine stay healthy, so I can continue to progress in my weight training. I usually have him do fairly deep tissue work
