Services
Red Willow Counseling and Recovery provides individual, family, and couples therapy. We are a group of therapists in Utah that specialize in many different areas. We specialize in substance and process addictions as well as a wide variety of mental illnesses including depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder; and work with mindfulness, spirituality, and religious challenges.
We provide evidence-based therapy for individuals, couples, and families challenged by mental health, addiction, and relationship issues in Salt Lake City. Our practice is defined by three core principles: Competence, Compassion, and Collaboration. We are committed to competent care by ensuring providers are professionally licensed, practice evidence-based therapy models, and participate in ongoing training and education.
The current pandemic and necessity for social distancing is a unique challenge we face together. Isolation may exacerbate or give rise to symptoms of depression, loneliness, and loss of motivation. Job loss, school closures, economic strain, illness, and rapid change can test and compromise our personal well-being, as well as the security of those relationships most important to us.
Therapy can help both individuals and families seeking to improve their quality of life. If you are experiencing prolonged sadness or anxiety, difficult life transitions, problems with past struggles, or any other debilitating issue that doesn't get better despite your efforts, our therapists can help you find the change you want in a safe and non-judgmental environment.
Addiction is a devastatingly deadly disease. In fact, more people die yearly from addiction than in car crashes despite the fact that addiction is treatable. You don't have to wait until your loved one hits rock-bottom to get help. With our guidance, your family can heal and overcome the disease of addiction.

This place is horrible, and the counselor I saw, Krista Clement, was absolutely god awful.
To start off, the person who manages the front desk is rude and irritable. They acted like me calling in with a few questions and wanting to set an appointment was a huge inconvenience for them. In hind sight, I should have taken that as a red flag and went else where for treatment, but I proceeded with setting an appointment with Krista, which I hugely regret.
Krista is a complete joke of a therapist. She is always late and unprepared. She does not take notes or even remember what we spoke about last session

BIPOC COMMUNITY BE AWARE *not a safe space
The therapist there was good, great first introductory meeting; however, getting into the therapist is another story. Good luck getting past the warden or front desk receptionist. Very ill-mannered lacks people skills which questionable for a counseling center. Why would they would have someone like that as the “face” of their business? Horrible customer service, insulting, did not explain or tell me that a deductible was needed to be met but instead charged my card for over $100.
When I asked why she didn't explain that to me before charging my

Bobby was a great therapist for me and helped more than any other counselor I have ever worked with. I worked with him for a year and was able to get to a much healthier , happier place with his help.

The therapist I saw here was wonderful. I wish I could still go there but my insurance changed.

Smart, experienced, and well-trained counselors (psychotherapists). Very friendly front office staff. I particularly like that they have extensive addiction treatment experience, as well as helping clients suffering from other psych problems. Understanding "dual disorders" and knowing how to help such patients is a unique skill set.

I have been working with James Ott on and off over the last 10 years. He is very compassionate and insightful. I have made it through some of the most difficult times in my life with his help and support.
I have not worked with any of the other staff at Red Willow Couseling, although my brief interactions have been warm and welcoming.
I am grateful that I found this clinic and recommend it to anyone who is looking for healthy and positive change. It has changed and saved my life.

My family has been fighting addiction for over a decade. We've had experience with several inpatient and outpatient programs as well as many counselors, therapists and doctors. What I love about Red Willow, and James in particular, is that it doesn't feel like someone just doing their job. It feels, in a sense, like we've gained a family member. There is genuine care and compassion, not only for the addict, but for the rest of us fighting the addiction with her. He is calm and reassuring while also being straightforward and realistic. He has helped us feel confident with some of the hardest choices

My husband and I visited James Ott many times over a four year period for help/advice with a very ill family member. I never felt counseling was helpful for anything, especially after a bad experience with a counselor in the past. But James is unique in that he is kind, compassionate and understanding. He has the knowledge, skills and experience imperative to provide good practical and realistic advice. We went through the absolute worst, and we never could have made it without James. He truly cares about his patients beyond just an office appointment. I wish that we had started counseling with

I've been to a few different places but this one definitely made me feel more like a dollar sign than a human being with feelings and needs. It is hard to feel comfortable in that more cutthroat environment.
Update - They made it right financially and apologized. Changed the review from 1 to 3 star.
