For some, it might be policies over 250,000. For others, it might be small policies for final expense, or they might specialize in certain health conditions, such as diabetes, or a history of cancer.
It replaces most of your income in the event you are unable to work due to an illness or injury. It is common for individual plans to start paying after a 90 day elimination period, although some plans will start after 30 or 60 days.
