After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force in 1975. In 1979 he graduated with honors with a psychology degree from the University of Georgia. In 1981 he graduated with a Masters in Public Administration with honors from the University of Georgia.
