Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks.
Everyone feels anxious now and then. It's a normal emotion. Many people feel nervous when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or making an important decision. This type of disorder is a serious mental illness. For people who have one, worry and fear are constant and overwhelming, and can be disabling.
Problem drinking that becomes severe is given the medical diagnosis of "alcohol use disorder" or AUD. Approximately 7.2 percent or 17 million adults in the United States ages 18 and older had an AUD in 2012. This includes 11.2 million men and 5.7 million women. Adolescents can be diagnosed with an AUD as well, and in 2012, an estimated 855,000 adolescents ages 12-17 had an AUD.
Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. They may mistakenly think that those who use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop their drug use simply by choosing to. In reality, drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will.
You feel on edge. Nightmares keep coming back. Sudden noises make you jump. You're staying at home more and more. Could you have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? If you have experienced severe trauma or a life-threatening event - whether during a time of war or in a noncombat situation - you may develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress, or what is commonly known as PTSD.
