Trauma can stop us in our tracks and teach us that life is dangerous and that we must be on guard. Often, in the months and years following something traumatic we learn to maintain a posture of fear and protection rather than exploration and curiosity. We become enslaved to this task of keeping ourselves and those we love safe and the sad consequence is that we can lose our ability to grow.
Half of those people who experience trauma become slaves to safety, but the other half grow stronger and braver. And the great news is that outcomes after trauma ARE NOT left up to chance. There are very clear steps we can take to ensure that life expands rather than shrinks. And, one of the most important steps is to allow another person to go on this journey of growth with you.

I love to learn and am committed to the ongoing training and growth that allows me to bring the very best help to my clients. Even more formative to the way that I help is my faith in Jesus, my 25 years of marriage to Geoff, my experience as mother of Timothy, Daniel and Joel and many more years of ministry and life in the Church.
Location dependent (Therapy may only be practiced in the state or states in which a therapist is licensed). As previously stated, there is plenty more that could be said on this topic. And, of course, these are generalizations and meant to be taken as such. Some coaches, for instance, might pay attention to the past in their work with clients.
Because I am both a therapist and a coach, it is especially important to be clear on this. All of my training, experience and resources, of course, remain the same and go with me in whichever role I am filling. But.the difference comes in the type of relationship we have. Although there is definitely some overlap (coaching frequently happens in therapy and people often experience "healing" during coaching), the focus of attention is different.
Story coaching is a life transforming process for helping clients to re-examine their personal stories, discover where they may be stuck and learn to tell their story in a truer way; a way that leads to freedom. Often we might think of bedtime stories or story-time at the library when we think of story but the truth is that story is the very stuff of life.

Trauma often causes people to get stuck in patterns of thought (governed by the emotional brain), unable to trust the signals of their bodies or the world around them, for fear of losing control and exposing themselves to danger. As a result we continue to scan our environment for cues of danger, no longer remembering how to listen to our body's signals and shift our experience.
