A building's support systems can be a significant source of unwanted noise and distraction for those occupying the space. In office space, this can prevent focused work or limit effective teleconferencing. Hospitals and medical facilities with these issues may see a correlation with patient care and recovery.
Regardless of the project size or location, unwanted outdoor noise can be a significant issue. During construction, this can manifest as noise impacting neighbors or building occupants. Either way, it's critical to analyze environmental noise impact for your project. Existing ambient site noise levels should be measured to determine the required windows and building envelope based on a project's noise goals.
Most people are less sensitive to vibration than noise, but many structure-borne vibration issues are described as "noise" by affected building occupants. Vibration-borne energy often transfers into disruptive air-borne noise. To address vibration issues, we document the vibration energy within the structure or ground.
High noise levels are not only irritating to most people, but can create substantial health and safety risks. Studies show that elevated noise levels can contribute to hearing loss and increase both blood pressure and cortisol levels. Integrated industrial noise control solutions are available and can work in concert with (and in some cases in lieu of) hearing protection.
