PERIODONTOLOGY is the area of dentistry dealing with the supporting structures of the teeth. This includes the gums, bone and roots of the teeth. PERIODONTAL DISEASE, also known as "gum disease", is a group of conditions that affect the gums, bone and roots of the teeth. Though it is often assumed to be a disease of "older people", it is often diagnosed in early adulthood and there are forms that may even affect children.
A Periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease (gum disease) and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas including two to three years of additional education beyond dental school. Periodontists are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.
Everyone can benefit from an evaluation by a periodontist. Sometimes the only way to detect periodontal disease is thorough a periodontal evaluation. Are planning to become pregnant. Pregnant women who have periodontal disease may be seven times more likely to have a baby born prematurely or of a low birth weight.
During your first visit, we will review your complete medical and dental history with you. It is extremely important for us to know if you are taking any medications or are being treated for any medical conditions, as they may affect your periodontal care. We will examine your gums and use a small measuring instrument between your teeth and gums to measure the depth of the spaces, known as periodontal pockets.

Dr. Eisen and his staff are top notch. After many unpleasant memories going to the dentist, I finally found one who does not hurt. I actually had a pleasant experience with his hygienist. She was absolutely wonderful. I am going there even though It will be totally out of pocket due to my current dental insurance restrictions.
