USSD Scripps Ranch
At USSD Scripps Ranch, we help each student achieve their individual goals in the Martial Arts. Because every person is unique, we believe their Martial Arts training programs should be as well. Martial Arts at USSD Scripps Ranch is more than kicking and punching - it's been way of life for over 10 years.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced martial artist, men, women and children of all ages and professions participate in our private and group training sessions. As one of the best martial arts dojos in California, our Chief Instructor helps everyone attain their highest goals. Here at USSD Scripps Ranch, you're not just another student.
Services
The problem with most Martial Arts schools is that they require the student to fit into the system. Here at USSD Scripps Ranch we adapt the system to fit the student. Through our balanced private and group class offerings, we customize student's training to help ensure efficient and effective results.
Sensei Bill Thomas is a 2nd Degree Black Belt instructor with over two decades of experience in the Martial Arts. A Navy veteran, Bill brings a wealth of real world experience, and is skilled in all aspects of Shaolin Kempo including weapons training. Bill is fully equipped to guide his students in all aspects of their Martial Arts journey.
The Five Principles of the United Studios of Self Defense system relate not only to a student's training, but also incorporate into every bit of a karate student's life. Be it academically, professionally or socially, the five principles are building blocks for the mentality of the true martial artist.
Since its founding in 1968, USSD has been established as the premiere Martial Arts and Self Defense organization throughout North America. From its early beginnings as a small studio in the outskirts of Boston, USSD has grown to over 70 locations nationwide and counting. Quite the history runs through the veins of the USSD family of dojos.
What we do know is that today nearly every martial art, including Kempo, in the world traces its beginnings to the Shaolin Temple. Evidence points to the existence of early forms of Martial Arts in China as early as the third century BC. Quite the history. By the 5th century AD it is clear that various fighting styles had developed throughout Asia.

Since Sensei Bill took over this karate studio a few months ago, it has evolved into a real gem! My little cousin who is only 6 years old has a great time here plus he has been making some great friends. Not only is he developing a very positive mental attitude / work ethic but I see great developments in his well being overall. Plus, when I pick him up after class, he's always excited for more. Overall, I'd recommend trying it out if you have a child or young relative interested in karate or needing a good after school activity.

Had a great time learning self-defense with the new chief instructor Sensei Bill. I don't have much prior experience but he did a great job of making me feel comfortable with both basic and complex Shaolin Kempo movements.

I agree with another reviewer. This is not really for young kids. My daughter was 4 and only went to maybe 4 classes which were only 20 -18 minuets. Ended up wasting $260. She didn't enjoy any of the class and was bored. I would advise to try the class first before signing up the agreement otherwise you will end up paying for cancellation like we had to.

This karate class is not for young kids. The teacher and owner are nice and the private lessons they offer are ok, but the group lessons had a mix of too many ages and were not geared toward the younger ones (my daughter tried it at age 6). They do not give enough explanations on the activities and new white belts can easily feel lost and intimidated. My daughter started crying before a group class one day because she felt lost and scared in class (and she is not usually like this). She started dreading going to both the group and private lessons. In addition... the class was not fun. I watched

We met Sensei Andrew at the Spring Family Fair in Poway and signed up for an intro session. My son enjoyed the intro session so much that we stayed and he attended his first group class while I signed him up. All of the Sensei's are fantastic with the kids and my son loves going to karate so much that he never wants to miss class. The Sensei's, Miss Laura and the kids are all very welcoming and inclusive.

We've been coming to class for about 5 months and my daughter loves it! The instructors are excellent at what they do, both in how they teach the fundamentals and how the connect to the children. Excellent all around and the investment well worth it (and valuable)! Do it!

My son absolutely loves his karate lessons at USSD in Scripps Ranch. I wasn't sure if he would be able to enjoy karate because he does have a disability but they welcomed us and made karate enjoyable and fun for him. My son gets overwhelmed in large groups so it's awesome they offer individual lessons every week when you sign up. They have also been super accommodating with our schedule to help us fit in weekly individual lessons. My son absolutely loves his lessons and it has helped his self esteem/confidence. We are very happy with the karate lessons at USSD

After my son turned 4 last September, I wanted him to start some form of martial arts to help with his self confidence. He is a very shy, emotional, and sensitive boy. I'm not familiar with all the different forms of martial arts and randomly selected this studio to have a trial class because it's close to our house and it had good reviews. I had the intention of visiting a couple of different places to see what was the best fit for my son but after meeting Sensei Andrew, I signed him up on the spot. 8 months later, I'm still very happy with my decision.

I like how they offer

USSD Scripps Ranch is a wonderful karate studio. My son is 3 1/2 years old and had expressed an interest in karate, but we were unsure of how he would do. He loves Sensai David and Sensai Andrew and looks forward to every class. They have a good pedagogical approach with sound practice. We are very happy!
