We train as part of the International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation. Karate-do is a Japanese phrase that means "way of the empty hand, " while Goju-Ryu means "Hard-Soft Style." Therefore, Goju-Ryu Karate-do carries with it the connotation that it is a balanced fighting style of soft and strong techniques, primarily relying upon the fighter's own hands and feet to the weapons of combat.
The IOGKF (International Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate-do Federation) is an organization that was created by Sensei Morio Higaonna in 1979, and today includes dojos from over 70 countries. It was created to ensure the preservation of traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu. The RB Karate Center has been a proud member of the IOGKF since the dojo was first established in 1997.

I'm a bit older than the typical student and wanted a goal-oriented approach to getting back in shape. I've been going for over two years now and feel better than ever. This is a great system of karate, and a great group of students to learn it with. Sensei Steve is one of the best teachers I've had also. Give it a try!

I have been training with Sensei Steve since 1998, initially at the Coronado dojo where he was an assistant instructor and most recent years at his dojo in RB. He is an excellent instructor and very knowledgeable when it comes to the Gojo Ryu style as taught by Sensei Morio Hiagonna. He was fortunate to train with Sensei Hiagonna on a frequent basis and his immediate instructor was one of a very few people to receive an instructors certificate from Sensei Hiagonna. I would thoroughly recommend him to anyone interested in traditional Gojo Ryu. The club is run like a family and his several senior

Sensei Steve Duz is a very ethical and authentic person. He is a wonderful Sensei for both kids and adults. He works on creating a "karate family" in the dojo. His teaching skills and patience are excellent. He encourages you to be "the best you can be." Karate at this dojo instills a wonderful feeling of self-worth and confidence, as well as a complete aerobic workout. This is great training for those of all ages and physical condition. .

My son has been a student of Sensei Steve's for over a year, and we love this center and Sensei.
When we started, my (then 4YO) was a timid and not very confident child. He asked to do karate, and we gladly signed him up hoping it would increase his self-confidence. I don't know if it was all due to karate, but now I think his head is almost too big. ;) In all seriousness, this experience has been great.
We looked at a lot of karate centers in the Rancho Bernardo area, and liked Sensei Steve's approach. He incorporates seriousness with fun and play. For a 4YO boy, this was crucial
