ChildRoots is a progressive and thoughtful learning community in the heart of Portland for families with young children ages six weeks to six years. We make space for loud, exuberant play, plan for puddles, and take time for independence. We're more than just day care - we maintain nurturing and beautiful environments where children are treated with compassion, deep respect, and love.
We strive to empower children to be their true, authentic selves. Through wonder, experimentation, and play; ChildRoots kids develop flexibility, resilience, and confidence. ChildRoots believes in respecting all people and celebrating diversity within our community. As educators, we strive to foster confidence, model compassion, and inspire mindfulness in our greater community.

Services
We recognize that a strong, consistent, and healthy bond between primary care providers and children is a necessary foundation for healthy growth, learning, and development. Our teachers are co-learners. They are trained to observe, research, and support your child's natural exploration of the world.
We are committed to business practices that are safe, sustainable, and best for our environment and for our children. For all children who wear diapers, we use our own cotton diaper panels, water-resistant snap-able diaper wraps, and flushable organic bamboo liners while children are at school.
At the end of each day, more than 300 pounds of used diapers are laundered at our off-site commercial laundry facility in energy-efficient washers and dryers. Our centers avoid using disposable materials whenever possible. This allows us to use fewer natural resources, less energy, and sends less trash to landfills.

ChildRoots is an art- and science-based day care and preschool dedicated to providing superior childcare for children ages six weeks to six years in Portland, Oregon. We see each child as an authentic, powerful individual. Our teachers are trained to provide a consistent, center-wide experience focused on social and emotional development, language acquisition, building self-esteem, and fostering a sense of wonder.
We view each child as a competent, imaginative, and curious self-learner. Given a safe, healthy, and stimulating environment; they will explore their own interests at their own pace. Rather than directing learning through a strict, teacher-led curriculum, we provide various learning opportunities through emergent curriculum.
We offer five community events each year that celebrate our schools, the seasons, and our community. These events are significant in the lives of the children enrolled here, but they are also enriching for our teachers and parents. The Lantern Walk is one of our most popular traditions. ChildRoots' families and teachers meet at a park where paper luminaries light a windy path through the canopied part of the forest.

Our son went to this location of Child Roots for 2 years and had a wonderful experience. Their focus on providing Reggio based activities and teaching children social/emotional skills was excellent! Each afternoon, they had an activity called "ateliers" where every teacher in the school would teach a small group about a subject they were an expert in. These were our son's favorite time each day! Having healthy vegetarian food provided was another nice addition and organically increased our son's palette and willingness to try new foods. (He came home demanded quinoa one day

I wouldn't say we are picky parents, but the saying "third time's a charm" fits for us. After trying two other childcare options, we found Childroots and we couldn't be happier. Their philosophy of child led learning and socializing is a perfect fit for our child. The director and teachers are always available and are in regular communications with us about how we can best help our kid overcome problems, enhance his learning, and work through some of this big childhood emotions. We know our kid is growing fast, and when we can't be there, we are so glad that Childroots

We adore Child Roots! Our oldest son attended from age three until he went to kindergarten and now our youngest son is there. The teachers are caring, creative and kind. We were skeptical about the cuisine as we didn't think our boys would like it, but they have become adventurous eaters because fo the wide variety to foods offered. We're so happy to be a Child Roots family.

Our son has been with the Fremont Center since it opened. Our older son also went through Childroots from daycare through preschool at other locations, so we have extensive experience with the school. I am so deeply grateful for this program, it's hard to express fully. It has been incredibly positive for my children in so many ways - social/emotional skills, creativity, independence, learning, joy, bonding with teachers. Too many to name! My kids have loved it here and thrived. For our kids, this has been the best child care in the city. Yes, it is pricey, but it is on par with other high

I am extremely grateful to Childroots. My son has special needs and we have been through several preschools. We were upfront with his challenges and they welcomed us with open arms. They were willing to take on the challenge and they were amazing. My son has gains so many skills since attending their school. We are moving onto Kindergarten soon and I am actually really sad to be leaving. The director is responsive and really nice. All of the staff is great but I am really blown away by the son's teachers. They were really skilled and willing to learn how to work with him. Besides that

We just wanted to take a minute and thank you - and the NW team - for being such a wonderful place for our daughter to learn and grow. We are both extremely grateful for the care the Childroots team gives her, day-in and day-out. It is not an easy job, as we all know, and we feel lucky that we get to drop her off at a place that, when we arrive in the morning (well, most mornings, at least...) she screams "SCHOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!!!" in her most excited tone. Every time we pull in, she knows where she is and seldom is she not happy to be there.

My son was here a year and I'll tell you pros and cons.
Pros: they wow you with the organic cooked food, the lovely space, and the supposedly child centered philosophy.
Cons: most expensive daycare in Portland, poor teacher retention (only retained 1 of 8 original teachers in a year!) due to poor work morale and low pay, terrible communication with families (the director wouldn't answered multiple phone calls or emails for days), low vaccination rates amongst families and unhygienic practices such as not washing water bottles after allowing the kids to sip on each other's bottles
