HFP strives to be a diverse and affirming community of all families, embracing those that are multiracial, LGBTQIA, divorced, or blended, as well as families from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Hawthorne Family Playschool's mission is to safeguard childhood, teach equity and inclusion, and build cohesive, caring community.
In an age in which teachers are pressured to teach academics, stripping learning from any meaningful context, we value play at the heart of our curriculum. In an age in which face-to-face time diminishes along with the increase of screen time, we nourish children's social learning as we assist them in gaining skills to build valuable relationships.
Each Sunday a carefully curated theme-based collection of stories, songs, activities, inspirations, and social activism come to your inbox! Resources emphasize play-based learning, fostering connections to the natural world, celebrating differences and teaching toward change. Intended for children 3-8 years old with articles, videos and food-for-thought for parents and teachers.
1 Acknowledge the financial disparity that exists between families; and act on that information, taking a step toward more equitably addressing these financial differences among families by asking families to pay according to their means. 2 Safeguard access of care for families with low or modest incomes, as families with less or modest incomes self-select to pay lower or middle-rate monthly tuition rates.
At Hawthorne Family Playschool, we believe participating in a parent cooperative, while lots of work, is deeply rewarding. Children have an early learning experience in which their own families are central and valued, bridging the gap between home and school. Children feel safe as their teacher knows and partners with their entire family.

HFP has made us better parents through the anti-bias curriculum and thoughtful classroom ethic that is so sensitive and caring when dealing with conflicts or strong emotions, encourages creative play, individuality, patience, etc. Teacher Susan is a gem - she cares deeply for each child and helping them grow. The classroom is lovely and the outdoor yard is a wonderland.

I adore Hawthorne Family Playschool and learning alongside the vibrant community of children and parents. As an early childhood professional, I've seen a huge range of experiences for young people and their families.
HFP is unique in our commitment
to embrace families of all configurations;
to support children's appreciation of similarities and differences;
to revere children's natural propensity toward joyful, invested learning through play;
and to nourishing children's connections to the natural world.

HFP is a fantastic coop preschool. The setting is split between a spacious church basement and a tree-filled outdoor play yard. Teacher Susan, with the assistance of us parents, helps kids from 3-5 navigate ecological, cultural, and developmental subjects that build compassion and curiosity. Susan is a role model to all of us in the HFP community and continually surprises us with how much she gives of herself. Most recommended.
