Gold bead implants are a permanent form of acupuncture. The gold beads are implanted on the acupuncture points on the dog's back and head. The gold beads are very tiny, about the size of a pinhead or tip of a fine ball point pen. They provide a long-term stimulation of the points. As with all forms of treatment, it will work for some and not for others.
In treating hip dysplasia our goal is to stop the pain in the hip joint by preventing subluxation of the joint. This is accomplished by placing 3 to 4 gold beads in specific nerve receptor sites outside of the joint. These points are located anterior, dorsal, and posterior to the hip joint. The joint tightens up immediately post implant with the gold beads.
In the Great Dane and the Mastiff we also see that there is not enough room for the spinal cord in the spinal canal. This is usually seen in dogs that weigh 120 plus pounds by the time they are 10 months of age. The longer it takes for the dog to reach 120 pounds, the more space that will be available for the spinal cord and the better they will respond to the gold bead implant.
This is a condition that can have many causes. Excess vertebral movement and improper diet during the growing stages of a dog can be causes of spondylosis. Some literature says spondylosis is secondary to a herniated disc, but excessive vertebral movement can cause the herniated disc.
Brucellosis can also be a cause for spondylosis as well as excessive amount of vitamin A. Our treatment for the spondylosis is the gold bead implant around the vertebrae of the back. This stabalize the vertebrae which prevents pain and allows the return of normal nerve function. Some dogs have had complete remodeling of their back within 2 years post gold bead implant.

Most of the arthritic cases of the stifle has been secondary to a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The cruciate ligament tear must be repaired before doing the gold bead implant. Once the cruciate ligament is repaired, many dogs do not require the gold bead implant. If the gold bead implant is needed, it is placed on the medial and lateral side of the stifle joint.

Was fostering a kitten that walked up to me in my back yard. She was and still is sick. They wanted to only give her a shot and not cared nothing about the well being of the kitten. Desided to now keep her and take her to a real vet. For 6 weeks all they wanted to do was give her a shot without even running test to find out what was wrong with her. Well now she has a forever home and she will get a good vet to find out what's wrong with her to get her healthy again.

Absolutely THE worst "veterinarian clinic" I have EVER been to!! Upon arriving I witnessed animals roaming in their fenced in area with NO shade nor water in over 80 degree heat and
rotting food with flies swarming around/in it sitting right in front of the entrance. A dog was in their "care" that was obviously suffering in the heat. The staff was incredibly rude and the facility was absolutely filthy. I was so let down by my findings seeing as how this is supposed to be a facility that is meant to be a safe haven for our furry family members. I'd rather travel out of town and pay a little extra

Several years ago, I had a Great Dane with wobbler's. He couldn't walk more than 1/2 block, couldn't go up stairs, had to be lifted into the car, collapsed when he squatted to move his bowels. We drove from NC to Indiana with Maverick to try Gold Bead Therapy. When we got home, Mavvy could jump into the car, jump on the bed, run up the stairs and walk a mile. Thank you Dr. Durkes -- you gave my boy a new lease on life.

I read this posted by a gentleman named William Tyler. I believe it was a very good question and I felt an important one. I hope he doesn't mind but I'm reposting it. Just curious if anyone has taken there dog to Southway animal hospital for either a c section or any surgery are they any good? New to the area. Dr Durkes is great. He's located… on State Road 18 by the 4H Fairgrounds in the building that the Marion animal care and control is located. He really cares about the animals he takes care of and his prices are very reasonable. Give him a try, I really believe you and your pet will

I don’t even know where to begin. A little history I opted for the cheapest way to get my girls fixed with money being tight thought I was doing the best thing for them. Needless to say on Feb 7th they were… fixed at a low cost facility, Feb 11 I had one dog vomiting everywhere and the other with a what we thought was a infection. Feb 12 we were in Dr Durkes office. We learned one dog in-needed had a infected incision and one a infection in her throat. I spent the next 5 days making trips to their office for 2 shots a day and medicine to try to get this throat infection to go away
