In 1905 Itosu established the five Pinan katas for the Okinawa public schools' physical education department. He reportedly developed the Pinans for the kata "Channan" he learned from the Chinese in Tomari village. Mabuni became the master of the Pinan katas and in 1919 taught them to Gichin Funakoshi.
Tuition and exam fees, along with the costs of kobudo equipment, are the ONLY mandatory costs for advancing in the program. We do not require any contract, instead we offer a month-to-month payment plan so students can train as their schedules allow. This allows our military and student population the flexibility to focus on training and studies as needed.

I love the Genbu-Kai Karate-Do with an abundance of respect and love.
I’ve been a part of this community for 11 years (since the 2nd grade). Now I am a college student, and I attribute a great deal of my dedication and commitment to achieving goals in life to my amazing Sensei. We are so lucky to have such a kind-hearted, strong, and knowledgeable teacher who pushes us to be the best that we can be. With the smaller class sizes, people get individual attention and learn self-defense in a positive and active environment. When I received my black belt, I came to the conclusion that the journey

This is my third dojo, since I was military and moved often, and this is my favorite of all three. The Sensei has lots of knowledge from decades of experience and is very patient and with children. The learning experience is very friendly and welcoming for new members.
My seven year old son and I attend together and we both enjoy it, giving us a shared experience to spend time together. I whole heartedly recommend this as a true karate experience - not like those 'McDojos' that advertise karate but teach nothing that the World Karate Federation recognizes, or make up their own martial

Super Dojo, authentic, traditional karate
The dojo is small, but the Sensei is very good, he works with the students and has been teaching for almost 50 years. Also, the people are all very kind and there is almost a family atmosphere. The only negative I can think of is that the dojo is difficult to find.

I've been taking Karate at Genbu-Kai Virginia for more then ten years. I credit the study of karate for a lot of positive improvements in the life. Greater range of motion, patience and focus. A practical result is a very quick recovery from hip replacement surgery. I felt very fortunate to find Genbu-Kai. I appreciate the philosophy as set out in the Dojo Kun: Be courteous in your manners. Have a strong sense of justice. Be responsible for your words and actions. Respect one another. Karate is the way of the spirit to develope the strength courage and ambition to reach your goals in life.
